Axar Patel's Fielding Masterclass: The Untold Transformation Story
Indian all-rounder Axar Patel has emerged as one of cricket's most electrifying fielders, with his recent T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final performance against England showcasing a remarkable athletic transformation. The 32-year-old Gujarat cricketer pulled off multiple spectacular catches, including a breathtaking relay effort with Shivam Dube that dismissed Will Jacks, drawing comparisons to legendary fielders and highlighting his journey from fitness struggles to world-class athleticism.
The World Cup Turning Point
During India's tense seven-run victory over England, Axar accounted for three crucial catches that many experts believe proved more decisive than Jasprit Bumrah's bowling spell. His most memorable moment came at deep point boundary, where he ran to his left while maintaining perfect composure near the rope, throwing the ball astutely to Shivam Dube to complete a stunning relay catch. Earlier in the match, Axar had executed a full-length diving catch to dismiss Harry Brook, reminiscent of Kapil Dev's iconic 1983 World Cup final catch.
"Axar's fielding sessions are always intense and he pushes others to maintain the same level," revealed former Gujarat Ranji team head coach Hitesh Majumdar in an exclusive interaction. "He is a natural fielder and very self-motivated, taking the initiative to practice from different positions on his own."
From Fitness Struggles to Fielding Excellence
Despite his current reputation as one of cricket's safest fielders, Axar's journey hasn't been straightforward. The all-rounder once earned the nickname 'Oscar' from friends for frequently making excuses to avoid gym training. Growing up in Gujarat, he developed unhealthy eating habits, consuming junk food that fortunately never showed on his waistline but hindered his athletic potential.
Former Team India Strength and Conditioning coach Soham Desai played a pivotal role in Axar's transformation, initiating a structured fitness program from 2018 that fully materialized around 2020-21. "He was a very gifted and naturally fit athlete but lacked people who could help maximize his potential," Desai explained. "Axar would somehow get injured every now and then with something or the other. There was a definite lack of structure which could propel long-term growth and excellence."
The Dramatic Injury Reduction
Desai implemented significant changes to Axar's training regimen, meal timings, and food consumption patterns, designing a sustainable template that reduced the cricketer's injury rate from 70-80% to just 5-10%. This dramatic improvement enabled Axar to consistently perform at his peak and develop the athletic resilience necessary for world-class fielding.
"Fitness definitely has a vital impact on aspects like fielding which have athletic demands," Desai emphasized. "Even if you look at Axar's catches, it is anticipation as well as putting the body in a position to pull off the catch. We identified certain movements in the gym or muscle groups which can cause injuries, preempting that and working towards building resilience and robustness."
Learning from Past Mistakes
Axar's fielding journey includes memorable learning moments, most notably during a September 2017 match against Australia in Bengaluru where he received a 'death stare' from MS Dhoni and a look of frustration from Virat Kohli. The all-rounder had reacted slowly while fielding at third man, delivering a lethargic return that allowed Australia to add two crucial runs.
Former India fielding coach R Sridhar has praised Axar's development, noting his constant curiosity and learner's mentality. The all-rounder now benefits from enhanced calmness gained through experience across different situations and has incorporated visualization techniques into his preparation. Sridhar highlighted Axar's ability to keep things simple while maintaining concise yet effective conversations as key to his fielding success.
The Kohli Connection
Axar's journey has come full circle with his current fielding excellence, particularly notable given his earlier interaction with Virat Kohli after a 2021 pink-ball Test. Kohli had suddenly interrupted Axar's post-match conversation with Hardik Pandya to praise his bowling in Gujarati, saying "Baapu tari bowling kamal che (Your bowling is great)," leaving both players in splits. While his bowling has dismantled opposition on numerous occasions, it's now his fielding that's capturing global attention.
Desai concluded by praising Axar's commitment levels and mental strength in sticking to the demanding transformation process. "The trophies and catches are simply a byproduct of the effort behind creating a foundation and fitness reserve which Axar never used to think about earlier," he stated, highlighting how the cricketer's focus on constant growth and excellence has transformed him into one of world cricket's most complete fielding assets.
