Andhra Premier League 2026 Set for Major Expansion Across Three Key Venues

The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has unveiled ambitious plans for the upcoming 2026 season of the Andhra Premier League (APL), marking a significant expansion of the state's premier T20 cricket tournament. In a strategic move to decentralize cricket and foster broader regional participation, the league will be conducted across three prominent venues: Visakhapatnam, Mangalagiri, and Kadapa.

Official Announcement and Strategic Vision

This groundbreaking decision was formally announced during a press conference held at the ACA administrative office in Vijayawada. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including franchise owners and senior association officials. ACA president and Member of Parliament Keshineni Sivanath, popularly known as Chinni, emphasized the association's commitment to spreading cricket across every corner of Andhra Pradesh.

"Last season, the APL was primarily confined to Visakhapatnam. For the 2026 edition, we are expanding our footprint to include Mangalagiri and Kadapa as host cities. Our objective is to take competitive cricket to diverse regions, providing wider exposure and opportunities for local talent," stated Sivanath.

Infrastructure Development and Headquarters Shift

In a notable development, Mangalagiri has been designated as the new headquarters for the Andhra Premier League moving forward. The stadium in Mangalagiri is undergoing extensive upgrades, with an investment of approximately ₹35 crore, as confirmed by APL general council chairman Sujaya Krishna Ranga Rao. This enhancement aims to create a world-class facility capable of hosting high-profile matches.

Beyond the immediate venues, the ACA is actively developing cricket infrastructure in other regions. Stadiums in Kakinada, Bhimavaram, and Anantapur are currently under development. Additionally, the Moolapadu Stadium in Vijayawada is being planned as a center of excellence, intended to meet national standards and serve as a hub for nurturing future cricketing stars.

Tournament Schedule and Operational Details

ACA secretary and MP Sana Satish Babu provided detailed insights into the tournament's operational framework. The governing council, in consultation with the seven team owners, has finalized the schedule for the 2026 season. Key dates include the player auction scheduled for April 25, with the opening match set to take place in Mangalagiri on June 3. The grand finale is slated for January 28 in Visakhapatnam.

To ensure a robust talent pipeline, domestic district matches will be conducted two months in advance of the main tournament. This initiative is designed to scout and identify promising players from across the state. Notably, the league is expected to feature prominent cricketers such as IPL star Nitish Reddy, adding to the competitive allure of the event.

Enhanced Financial Framework and Ethical Oversight

The financial dynamics of the league have also been bolstered. The auction purse for teams has been increased from ₹45 lakh to ₹55 lakh, providing franchises with greater flexibility to acquire top talent. Furthermore, to maintain integrity and fair play, each team will have a retired police officer appointed as an ethics officer, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of conduct throughout the tournament.

To build statewide enthusiasm and engagement, warm-up matches will be organized across various regions prior to the main event. This approach aims to galvanize local communities and create a festive atmosphere around cricket, reinforcing the APL's role as a unifying force in Andhra Pradesh's sporting landscape.

The expansion of the Andhra Premier League to three venues represents a strategic leap forward for cricket in the state. By decentralizing hosting rights and investing in infrastructure, the ACA is laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth, talent development, and enhanced fan engagement, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a significant contributor to India's cricketing ecosystem.
