Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar: The IAF Officer Honored to Unfurl Flag with President Murmu
The unfurling of the Indian national flag stands as one of the most prestigious ceremonial moments during the Republic Day celebrations, symbolizing national pride and unity. This year, that honor was shared by President Droupadi Murmu and Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar, a dedicated officer from the Indian Air Force.
Who is Akshita Dhankar?
Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar hails from Kasni village in Haryana, where her roots are deeply connected to military service. Her father, a military veteran who once participated in the Republic Day parade himself, served as a profound inspiration for her to pursue a career in the armed forces. This early influence sparked a dream that would shape her future.
During her college years at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Akshita's aspiration to join the forces began to crystallize. She became an active cadet in the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where her focus, discipline, and unwavering purpose propelled her to the rank of Cadet Sergeant Major. In this leadership role, she guided fellow cadets, laying a solid foundation for her eventual entry into the Indian Air Force.
Journey to the Indian Air Force
Akshita's path to the IAF was marked by determination and hard work. She appeared for the Air Force Common Admission Test and successfully cleared the selection process, earning a recommendation from the Air Force Selection Board in Mysore. In June 2023, her efforts culminated in her commissioning as a Flying Officer in the Administration branch, as part of the 211 Short Service Commission (Women) Ground Duty Course.
Today, she serves as a Flight Lieutenant, entrusted with critical operational functions within Air Force units. Her responsibilities include personnel coordination and logistical planning, roles that demand precision and dedication. In recognition of her steady and commendable work, Akshita was selected to participate in the 77th Republic Day Parade, a testament to her excellence and commitment.
The Republic Day Honor
On January 26, 2026, Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar stood close to President Droupadi Murmu at Kartavya Path, assisting in the unfurling of the national flag during the Republic Day parade. This moment was not only a personal milestone for Akshita but also a highlight of the ceremonial proceedings, reflecting the courage, unity, and determination that define the armed forces.
In an interview with ANI, Akshita expressed her deep honor at being chosen for this role. She shared that the preparation for the parade had been intense, with rigorous practice sessions spanning over two months. "The practice has been rigorous. We've been waking up early. We've been going home late," she said, emphasizing the dedication required. "I think in the end, it is all worth it. I feel this is what the armed forces stand for—courage, unity, and determination," she added, capturing the spirit of the occasion.
This event underscores the growing role of women in the Indian Air Force and celebrates individuals like Akshita Dhankar, whose journey from a village in Haryana to the national stage inspires many. Her story is a powerful reminder of how passion, supported by discipline and opportunity, can lead to remarkable achievements in service to the nation.
