The sporting spirit is soaring high in Vijayawada as the prestigious South Zone Inter-University Men's Badminton Tournament for 2026 officially began at KL University. The grand inauguration took place on Saturday, January 3, marking the start of a four-day sporting spectacle that will conclude on January 6.
A Platform for National Aspirations
The event was formally inaugurated by Animini Ravi Naidu, the Chairman of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP). Addressing the gathering, Naidu emphasized the tournament's critical role as a qualifying gateway. He stated that this competition offers university-level shuttlers a direct opportunity to earn their spot in the national inter-university badminton championship.
The scale of participation is impressive, highlighting the tournament's significance. A total of 128 universities from five southern states are competing. These include Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Representing these institutions are 896 talented players, creating a highly competitive atmosphere. The tournament is inclusive, featuring both senior and junior players, which further intensifies the level of play.
Government's Push for Sports Development
Chairman Ravi Naidu also took the opportunity to shed light on the state government's proactive measures to bolster sports. He revealed a significant achievement where 421 qualified sportspersons were provided government employment through the Mega Sports DSC. This recruitment was conducted under the horizontal reservation system, notably without a written examination, prioritizing sporting merit.
Looking to the future, Naidu announced an important infrastructure development. He stated that badminton facilities are being proposed as a mandatory feature in all Sports Development Centres across Andhra Pradesh. This move aims to standardize and promote the sport at the grassroots level.
Beyond Competition: Building Character
Adding to the inaugural ceremony's discourse, Dr. G. Parthasarathy Verma, the Vice-Chancellor of KL University, highlighted the holistic benefits of such events. He remarked that participation in sports is instrumental for students, helping them develop not just physical fitness but also crucial mental strength and resilience.
The tournament, currently underway, is focused on men's doubles matches. The courts at KL University will witness intense action as players from across South India vie for top honors and a chance to advance to the national stage.
