Windsurfer's Dramatic Collision with Gray Whale in San Francisco Bay Captured on Video
A windsurfer in San Francisco experienced what he later described as "a 'whale' of a day" after an unexpected mid-ride collision with a surfacing gray whale. The startling incident, which occurred at the popular Crissy Field location, was captured in a video that has since circulated widely online despite being deleted from its original source.
The Sudden Encounter at Crissy Field
Eric Kramer was gliding across the waters of San Francisco Bay when the massive marine mammal suddenly breached directly in his path. With absolutely no time to react, Kramer struck the animal and was violently launched off his windsurfing board, tumbling into the water. The footage, originally posted by Kramer himself before being removed, begins with a deceptively calm Bay scene.
The video shows:
- A cargo ship moving steadily in the background
- Beachgoers scattered peacefully along the shoreline
- Kramer windsurfing at speed into the frame
Seconds later, the gray whale breaks the surface dramatically, and the collision sends the windsurfer flying through the air. The animal appeared largely unfazed by the impact, quickly disappearing beneath the water, while Kramer was left floating in the Bay, visibly shaken but seemingly unharmed.
Windsurfer's Response and Public Reaction
In a caption accompanying the now-deleted clip, which was quoted by the New York Post, Kramer wrote: "It was a 'whale' of a day. Please be cautious and respect wildlife. I had reduced my speed greatly because I had seen a couple whales in the area, but on my last run back it just popped up right in front of me. Glad we are both okay."
The footage, recorded on March 24, also provides glimpses of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in the distance from a separate angle that has been shared online. The video quickly drew significant reactions from viewers, with many questioning Kramer's decision to continue windsurfing despite having spotted whales nearby.
Notable viewer comments included:
- "I mean if you noticed them there, then why did you still decide to sail?"
- "Hmm - what happened to keeping back 300 feet from marine mammals?"
Gray Whale Migration and Bay Encounters
While such dramatic encounters remain relatively rare, they are not entirely unheard of in San Francisco Bay. Gray whales undertake their annual migration along the California coast each year, passing through these waters during their journey. Sightings of these majestic creatures have become increasingly frequent in recent times, though this has also raised concerns among marine biologists and conservationists.
Disturbingly, reports indicate that four gray whales have already been found dead in San Francisco Bay this year alone, highlighting the potential dangers and challenges these animals face during their migration. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife boundaries and maintaining safe distances from marine mammals, even in popular recreational areas like Crissy Field.
