Jean-Eric Vergne Eyes Historic Second Win at Sanya E-Prix Return
Vergne Eyes Historic Second Win at Sanya E-Prix

Jean-Eric Vergne remains the only driver to have won the Sanya E-Prix, having claimed victory in its inaugural race in 2019. Driving for the DS Techeetah team at the time, he made history on the streets of Sanya. Now racing for Citroen Racing, Vergne has returned to the city where he achieved that milestone. However, with the venue returning to the Formula E calendar after a seven-year hiatus, several drivers will be vying for victory in this season's Sanya E-Prix.

Can Jean-Eric Vergne Win in Sanya Again?

Citroen Racing recently shared a glimpse of Vergne's 2019 victory in Sanya on Instagram. The post was captioned: “The tide turns back to Sanya. Last time Formula E raced in Sanya, Jean-Eric Vergne left as the winner. The only race here. The only winner here. Now, as we return to the shores of Haitang Bay, the question is simple: can history hold its line?”

Cheering him on, his Citroen Racing teammate Nick Cassidy responded with a raised hands emoji in the comments. Formula E's official Instagram account also commented: “Can’t wait to find out.”

One fan wrote: “Ready and excited to recreate what this team is ready to give to its fans! Allez Citroën.” Another commented: “Hope JEV gets lucky and everyone achieves good results…”

Vergne was recently in France to support his friends at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sharing a few pictures from the race weekend, he wrote: “Le Mans 2026 - came to support my friends @peugeotsportofficial. Missed not driving this year, but I can’t wait to be back behind the wheel next year!”

Formula E Returns to Sanya After Seven Years

Sanya is a unique venue, known as one of China's most popular resort cities, famous for its beaches and tropical scenery. Citroen Racing recently shared a stunning video on Instagram with the caption: “Sanya. We’ve arrived in tropical Sanya, where the heat is on and race week is officially underway. While the team gets to work building the garage and preparing everything behind the scenes, we’re getting ready to hit the track at Haitang Bay. Race week starts now.”

Vergne is currently 16th in the Formula E Drivers' Standings with 14 points, while Cassidy sits seventh with 71 points.

The Sanya E-Prix weekend begins on Friday with the first free practice session. Saturday's schedule features FP2, qualifying and the Round 11 race.
