Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas has showered praise on legendary Pakistani pacer Wasim Akram, calling him the most complete fast bowler he has ever witnessed. Vaas, who himself was a formidable swing bowler, also commended Indian seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for his exceptional swing bowling abilities.
Vaas on Wasim Akram
Speaking to the media, Vaas highlighted Akram's unique ability to swing the ball both ways at high pace, making him a nightmare for batsmen. "Wasim Akram was the complete package. He had pace, swing, and the intelligence to outthink batsmen. He could bowl yorkers, bouncers, and reverse swing with equal ease. For me, he is the most complete fast bowler I have seen," Vaas stated.
Comparison with Modern Bowlers
Vaas also drew comparisons between Akram and contemporary bowlers, noting that while many fast bowlers have emerged over the years, none have matched Akram's all-round skill set. "In today's era, we see bowlers with pace or swing, but rarely both. Wasim had everything. He was a true artist with the ball," he added.
Praise for Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Moving on to the current generation, Vaas expressed admiration for India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar, particularly his ability to swing the ball early on. "Bhuvneshwar is a wonderful swing bowler. He has that classic outswinger and the ability to bring the ball back into the right-hander. His control and seam position are excellent," Vaas remarked.
Bhuvneshwar's Impact in Limited-Overs Cricket
Vaas believes that Bhuvneshwar's skills are especially effective in limited-overs cricket, where swing bowling can be a potent weapon. "In ODIs and T20s, swing bowlers are gold dust. Bhuvneshwar can pick up early wickets and put pressure on the opposition. He has been a key asset for India," he said.
Vaas's Own Legacy
Reflecting on his own career, Vaas acknowledged that he learned a lot from watching Akram and other greats. "I tried to emulate some of Wasim's techniques, but he was in a league of his own. I am happy to have played in an era with such amazing bowlers," he concluded.
Chaminda Vaas, who took 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets for Sri Lanka, remains one of the most respected bowlers in cricket history. His insights into fast bowling continue to inspire young cricketers around the world.
