In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, seventeen-year-old gymnast Uzair from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, passed away at a government hospital in Kolkata on Thursday. The young athlete succumbed to injuries sustained nearly two weeks earlier during a practice session for a national championship, leaving his family and supporters in profound grief.
Journey to Kolkata and the Fateful Incident
Uzair, the son of construction worker Mazhar Ali who resides near Jama Masjid Road in Sabzi Mandi, Ujjain, had embarked on a journey to Kolkata on the night of January 11. Accompanied by his coach and manager, he was set to represent Madhya Pradesh in the SGFI National Gymnastics Championship, showcasing his talent as a two-time champion. A Class 10 student at Study Home School located at KD Gate in Ujjain, Uzair's aspirations were tragically cut short.
On January 16, his family received distressing news from a teammate that Uzair had suffered serious injuries after falling during a warm-up session before the championship. Dr Shakib Anjum, Uzair's maternal uncle, recounted the moment, stating, "We were informed that he was critically injured. We reached there based on the information." This marked the beginning of a harrowing two-week battle for life that ultimately ended in tragedy.
Family's Anguish and Allegations of Neglect
Following Uzair's death, his family brought his body back to Ujjain on Friday, where he was laid to rest at Maulana Moj Cemetery in the afternoon. The journey involved transporting the body from Kolkata to Indore by flight and then to Ujjain, a somber procession that underscored the family's loss.
In the aftermath, Dr Shakib Anjum voiced serious allegations against the sports department's coach and manager, claiming they were conspicuously absent during the critical period. "During this entire period, the sports department's coach and manager were nowhere to be found. They did not even answer our calls when we tried to contact them," he said. He further highlighted that officials from Bengal's sports department stepped in to provide considerable assistance, contrasting sharply with the perceived inaction from his own state's representatives.
Shakib raised pointed questions about accountability, asking, "The coach has a role during practice sessions. The question arises: where were they at that time?" He also noted that CCTV footage from the BNR Centre in Kolkata, where the practice and incident occurred, was not made available, adding to the family's frustrations and suspicions of negligence.
Official Response and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the incident, District Education Officer Mahendra Khatri provided an official account, stating, "The boy went with the team. On Jan 16, he was injured during practice. The coach and manager immediately admitted him to the hospital. When the family members arrived, he was handed over to them. The situation of those responsible is being examined. If negligence and insensitivity are found, action will be taken soon." This statement aims to address the allegations while promising a thorough review.
Following Uzair's burial, employees from the education department visited the family to conduct routine inquiries, indicating that authorities are taking steps to investigate the matter further.
