Tunisia have reportedly dismissed manager Sabri Lamouchi just one match into their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, following a humiliating 5-1 loss to Sweden in their group stage opener. The defeat has been described as one of the worst in the nation's international history.
Heavy Defeat and Immediate Action
The North African side was thoroughly outplayed on Sunday, with Sweden's Yasin Ayari scoring twice, while Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, and Mattias Svanberg each added a goal. Tunisia's only response came from Omar Rekik in the 43rd minute. The defensive collapse prompted the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) to act swiftly. According to French journalist Romain Molina, as quoted by Goal.com, the FTF terminated Lamouchi's contract immediately after the match ended.
Dressing Room Tensions and First Casualty
While the on-field result was a major factor, reports indicate that significant dressing room tensions also contributed to the coach's dismissal. Lamouchi becomes the first manager to be sacked during the ongoing World Cup. His tenure with Tunisia lasted only five matches across all competitions.
What's Next for Tunisia?
Tunisia, appearing in their sixth World Cup, may turn to former manager Mondher Kebaier on an interim basis. Additionally, former Sunderland and Tunisia star Wahbi Khazri is a frontrunner for the permanent role. Whoever takes charge must quickly address the team's issues, as tough matches against Japan (June 21 in Guadalupe, Mexico) and the Netherlands (June 26 in Kansas City, USA) lie ahead. Tunisia has never advanced past the group stage in any of their previous five World Cup appearances.
