Weeks after the tragic speedboat accident in the Maldives that claimed the life of Chandigarh's motorsports icon Hari Singh, fellow rallyist Sunny Sidhu has demanded transparency and accountability in the investigation. Singh, known as the "Gypsy King," went missing on March 19 and was later presumed dead, leaving the motorsports community in shock and mourning.
Social Media Outcry for Justice
In a social media post titled "Justice for Hari Singh," which has been shared over 115 times since April 7, Sidhu outlined several critical concerns regarding the incident and the subsequent probe. He questioned why a speedboat was deployed from a luxury yacht around midnight and whether the operator was tested for alcohol or was driving at unsafe speeds, raising alarms about potential negligence.
Major Safety Lapses Highlighted
Sidhu highlighted significant safety lapses, pointing out that seven people were allegedly aboard a vessel designed for only five, and that passengers were not provided with life jackets. Additional concerns included whether the operator was properly licensed and why a passenger was reportedly allowed to stand while the boat was in motion, increasing the risk of accidents.
Delays and Allegations in the Investigation
The rallyist also criticized the 14-hour delay in informing the victims' families and alleged that the operator left the site without providing a statement. He expressed serious reservations about the integrity of the investigation, questioning why yacht guests were allowed to leave the country, potentially hindering the inquiry.
Challenges to Official Narrative
Sidhu further pointed to delays in the investigation, stating the yacht was not inspected until eight days after the incident. He challenged the official attribution of the crash to mechanical failure, suggesting the case was being handled to avoid charges of culpable homicide. He urged authorities to provide clear answers and ensure an impartial inquiry to uncover the truth.
Support from Motorsports Community
Shashi Pal Singh Garcha, president of the Chandigarh Motorsports Association and a close friend of Hari Singh, supported these concerns, stating that despite asking these questions, they have received no answers. This lack of response has fueled calls for greater accountability and transparency in the handling of the case.
