Paralympic Champion Sumit Antil Files Harassment Complaint Against Javelin Coach
In a significant development within Indian athletics, two-time Paralympic medallist Sumit Antil has formally accused his javelin coach, Naval Singh, of severe mental harassment and abusive conduct. The complaint, submitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), has garnered powerful support from Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, who has demanded immediate and strict action against the coach.
Multiple Athletes Submit Written Allegations to Sports Authority
According to detailed reports, a group of elite Indian javelin throwers collectively filed a written complaint with SAI on April 10. The document outlines serious allegations against Coach Naval Singh, including repeated verbal abuse, systematic mental harassment, and inappropriate professional behavior. The complaint was also formally raised with officials from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Sumit Antil, who initiated the formal grievance process, described a persistent pattern of misconduct that he claims has consistently crossed professional boundaries. "I have always been a clean athlete, and I don't want to be part of any controversy. I tried to explain to him multiple times, but this is not the first time. It has gone beyond my patience level," Antil stated in his official complaint.
Allegations of Abusive Audio Messages and Family Insults
The Paralympic champion provided specific details about the alleged harassment, claiming that Coach Naval Singh would send abusive audio messages to athletes. "He gets drunk and sends random recordings abusing us and dragging our families into it. He tends to behave this way when competitions approach," Antil revealed. Supporting evidence submitted to SAI reportedly includes audio recordings where Singh is allegedly heard verbally abusing not only Antil but also other prominent athletes including Neeraj Chopra, Navdeep Singh, and even Pakistan's Olympic medallist Arshad Nadeem.
Antil emphasized the degrading nature of the language used, stating, "The language used has been extremely degrading, not only towards athletes but also towards our families." Despite multiple formal complaints and attempts at resolution through discussions with SAI officials including Deputy Director Arunlal and TOPS CEO Nash Johal, Antil reported that no concrete action has been taken against the coach to date.
Neeraj Chopra Strongly Condemns Coach's Conduct
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has thrown his considerable weight behind the complaining athletes, sending a strongly worded email to authorities condemning the alleged behavior. "I stand in full agreement with my fellow athletes and strongly demand strict action in this matter," Chopra wrote in his official communication.
The javelin superstar elaborated on his position, stating, "I write this as an athlete who has had the honour of representing India at both national and international levels. Sport must uphold dignity, discipline, and respect. The statements made by coach Naval Singh are not just inappropriate; they are disgraceful." Chopra's intervention adds significant momentum to the athletes' demand for accountability and proper investigation.
Previous Resolution Attempts and Ongoing Concerns
Sumit Antil disclosed that he had previously engaged with SAI officials in attempts to resolve the escalating situation through dialogue and mediation. However, he ultimately rejected compromise solutions, citing the repetitive nature of the incidents and the severity of the alleged misconduct. The Paralympic medallist expressed frustration that despite multiple formal complaints and documented evidence, no disciplinary measures have been implemented against Coach Naval Singh.
This case raises important questions about athlete welfare, coaching standards, and grievance redressal mechanisms within Indian sports administration. The involvement of high-profile athletes like Sumit Antil and Neeraj Chopra ensures that this complaint will receive serious attention from sports authorities and the public alike.
