Karate Star Pranay Sharma Suspended for Refusal to Provide Sample
Pranay Sharma, a leading karate athlete who has won multiple silver and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Championships, faces suspension after being found guilty under NADA's article 2.3 for "refusal" to provide a urine sample to dope control officers. Sharma made history three years ago by becoming the first Indian to win gold at the Karate 1 Series A event in Jakarta. He is also a four-time South Asian gold medallist and national champion.
Pranay Sharma comes from a distinguished karate family, being the son of Hanshi Bharat Sharma, a prominent figure in Indian karate and president of the Karate India Organisation. His suspension marks a significant setback for Indian karate on the international stage.
Wrestler Radhika and Other Athletes Test Positive for Clenbuterol
Radhika, who competes in the women's 68kg category and has represented India internationally, failed a dope test for clenbuterol. This substance is classified as a non-specified anabolic agent on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list, known for its muscle-building and fat-burning effects.
Other athletes who tested positive for clenbuterol include wrestlers Priyanka and Nitin, along with volleyball player Shahbaj Ali. These cases highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining clean sport across multiple disciplines.
Canoeist Shubham Kewat Tests Positive for Methyltestosterone
Another notable athlete facing suspension is canoeist Shubham Kewat, who was part of India's contingent for the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. His urine sample revealed traces of methyltestosterone, a substance commonly used to enhance muscle strength, mass, and power.
Kewat competed in the men's kayak (slalom) event at the Asian Games, finishing outside the medal bracket. Despite this recent setback, he previously won gold in the same event at the National Games in Panaji, demonstrating his competitive potential.
