Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has asserted that the ambitious Bidadi Township project is a key solution to Bengaluru's worsening traffic congestion and housing shortage. Speaking at a press conference on June 21, 2026, Shivakumar highlighted that the satellite city will provide affordable housing and employment opportunities, drawing thousands of residents away from the overcrowded capital.
Project Overview and Capacity
The Bidadi Township, located about 30 kilometers from Bengaluru, is envisioned as a self-sustained urban center. According to Shivakumar, the project will accommodate over 1.5 million residents once fully developed. The township will feature 200,000 housing units, with 60% designated as affordable housing for low- and middle-income families. The project is being developed on 4,000 acres of land acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
Impact on Traffic Congestion
Bengaluru, often called India's Silicon Valley, has some of the worst traffic in the world. A 2025 TomTom Traffic Index ranked the city fourth globally for congestion. Shivakumar noted that the Bidadi Township will reduce the number of daily commuters entering Bengaluru by approximately 500,000. "The township will create 300,000 jobs locally, including in IT parks, manufacturing units, and service sectors," he said. "This will drastically cut down the need for people to travel to Bengaluru for work."
Housing Crisis Mitigation
Bengaluru faces a housing shortage of over 1.2 million units, according to a 2024 report by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The Bidadi project aims to address this by providing affordable homes priced between INR 15 lakh and INR 40 lakh. Shivakumar emphasized that the project includes provisions for rental housing, with 20% of units reserved for economically weaker sections. "We are ensuring that the township is inclusive and meets the needs of all income groups," he added.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
The township will be connected to Bengaluru via a dedicated metro line, a six-lane expressway, and a suburban rail network. These infrastructure projects are expected to be completed by 2028, with an estimated cost of INR 12,000 crore. Shivakumar stated that the state government has already allocated INR 3,500 crore for the initial phase. "Connectivity is the backbone of this project. Without efficient transport, the township cannot succeed," he said.
Timeline and Implementation
The first phase of the Bidadi Township is scheduled for completion by December 2028, providing 50,000 housing units and 80,000 jobs. The entire project is expected to be finished by 2035. Shivakumar urged private developers to participate, noting that the government will provide land and basic infrastructure. "We are open to public-private partnerships to expedite the process," he said.
Environmental and Social Considerations
The project includes green building norms, with 30% of the area reserved for parks and open spaces. A desalination plant will supply water, and a waste-to-energy plant will manage solid waste. Shivakumar assured that local communities would be rehabilitated with fair compensation. "We have learned from past mistakes in other satellite towns. The Bidadi project will be a model for sustainable urban development," he concluded.
