Mumbai Photographer's Coastal Road Shot Wins Top Marathon Award
A breathtaking panoramic photograph of marathon runners racing along the newly inaugurated Mumbai Coastal Road has secured the first prize for TOI photographer Sanjay Hadkar at the prestigious Tata Mumbai Marathon 2026 Philanthropy Awards. The award ceremony was held at Hotel Trident on Wednesday, celebrating excellence in photography that highlights the spirit of the marathon and its philanthropic mission.
Capturing a Historic Milestone for Mumbai
Sanjay Hadkar's winning image immortalized a significant moment in Mumbai's urban development, as it was the first time marathon participants were allowed to run along the Coastal Road. This infrastructure project represents a new landmark for the city, symbolizing progress and connectivity. Hadkar explained the challenges and thought process behind his award-winning shot.
"This was the inaugural occasion that marathoners were permitted to run along the Coastal Road, which stands as a fresh architectural and infrastructural icon in Mumbai. The early morning chill of January presented a considerable obstacle, but I was determined to find the perfect vantage point to document this historic milestone. Fortunately, I discovered a spot that provided me with a perfectly symmetrical composition," said Hadkar, reflecting on his achievement.
The Significance of the Philanthropy Awards
The Tata Mumbai Marathon Philanthropy Awards are designed to recognize and honor photographers who capture the essence of the marathon's charitable endeavors and the vibrant energy of the event. Hadkar's photograph not only showcases athleticism but also emphasizes the integration of Mumbai's evolving skyline with community events, highlighting how public infrastructure can enhance civic life.
The image serves as a powerful reminder of the marathon's role in promoting health, unity, and philanthropy across the city. It underscores the importance of visual storytelling in documenting urban transformation and celebrating collective achievements.
