Formula E Driver Edoardo Mortara Voices Support for F1's Hybrid Transition

In a significant development within motorsport circles, Edoardo Mortara of Mahindra Racing has joined the growing list of Formula E drivers commenting on Formula One's recent regulatory overhaul. This season, F1 has implemented major reforms, most notably the introduction of hybrid powertrains in its cars, marking a pivotal shift in the sport's technological landscape.

Mortara's Perspective on F1's Electrification Path

While some drivers, such as Lucas Di Grassi, have expressed reservations about the new F1 vehicles, Mortara has emerged as a vocal supporter. In an exclusive interview with Timesofindia.com, the Swiss driver articulated his approval, emphasizing that initial challenges are to be expected with such sweeping changes.

"Formula One is following the trend we see across the automotive industry, with manufacturers moving more and more towards electrification," Mortara stated. "You can see more fully electric cars and also more hybrid powertrains. In that sense, Formula One reflects what is happening in the automotive world."

He further elaborated that hybrid technology represents the future, and F1's adoption aligns with broader industry movements towards sustainable and efficient engineering solutions.

Adaptation and Evolution in Motorsport

Mortara believes that the racing community will gradually acclimate to these new regulations. "With major regulation changes, there are always challenges at the beginning," he explained. "It can surprise many people in the industry – drivers, engineers, mechanics. But over time, people converge towards the best technical solutions and become familiar with the new regulations."

He acknowledged that some teams are currently facing difficulties, which he described as a normal part of the transition process. "Right now it's making a lot of noise because some teams may be struggling with the changes, which is quite normal," Mortara noted.

Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the sport's ability to adapt. "But I'm sure it will become exciting, and given the level in Formula One, I expect the teams to adapt quickly. What feels new and surprising now will probably look quite normal in the coming months or years," he added, predicting a smooth integration of the hybrid systems.

Mortara's Impressive Formula E Season Performance

Beyond his insights on F1, Edoardo Mortara has been delivering standout performances in the current Formula E championship. He holds second place in the Drivers' Standings with 72 points, trailing leader Pascal Wehrlein who has 83 points.

His achievements this season include:

  • Securing two podium finishes in six races
  • Finishing in the top six in each of the last five races
  • Claiming second place in both the Mexico and Jeddah events

Mortara is set to return to competition at the upcoming Berlin E-Prix, a double-header event scheduled from May 1-3, where he will aim to close the gap in the championship race.
