Mirabai Chanu: India's Weightlifting Icon Targets Asian Games Glory and Olympic Excellence
Mirabai Chanu, the celebrated Padma Shri awardee and undisputed powerhouse of Indian weightlifting, has opened up about her ambitious sporting journey. In an exclusive conversation, she reveals her determination to settle "unfinished business" at the Asian Games while outlining a meticulous roadmap for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Olympic Aspirations: Beyond Repeating Tokyo Success
When asked about replicating her Tokyo Olympic feat at Los Angeles 2028, Chanu responded with characteristic humility and focus. "I'm looking forward to my fourth Olympics in Los Angeles, and that in itself is very special," she stated. "Every Olympics teaches you something new, and I carry those lessons forward. My focus is not on repeating Tokyo but on improving myself and performing better than before."
The champion weightlifter emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent in Indian weightlifting. "India has a lot of young talent coming up, and I would be very happy to see more weightlifters doing well at the Olympic level. It is important for the sport that new athletes rise and take things forward," she added, showcasing her commitment to the sport's growth beyond personal achievements.
LA 2028 Preparations: Learning from Paris Setback
Chanu's preparations for Los Angeles 2028 are already underway, informed by the tough experience of the Paris Olympics. "Paris Olympics was a tough experience. Missing a medal by just one kilogram is never easy, but that is a motivating factor for me now," she confessed. "At this level, even the smallest improvement can make a big difference."
Her approach combines physical rigor with mental fortitude. "For Los Angeles, my focus is on discipline and consistency. I am working closely with my coaches on technique, strength, and recovery. I am also paying a lot of attention to mental preparation because staying calm under pressure is crucial. The goal is to be in my best shape and give my 100 percent on competition day."
Commonwealth and Asian Games: Dual Objectives
The champion weightlifter has clear expectations for upcoming multi-sport events. "Both Commonwealth Games and Asian Games are important for me and for the country," Chanu affirmed. "The Commonwealth Games have always been special, and I would love to perform well there again."
However, it's the Asian Games that hold particular significance in her competitive calendar. "At the same time, the Asian Games is very important personally because I still have unfinished business there. The competition level is very high, which makes it even more challenging and exciting. My focus will be on preparing for a podium finish," she declared with determination.
Mirabai Chanu's journey continues to inspire a generation of Indian athletes as she balances personal ambition with national pride, eyeing redemption at the Asian Games while building toward Olympic excellence in Los Angeles.
