Ludhiana's Bridge Sports Courts Face Severe Neglect
Sports courts developed under bridges in Ludhiana are grappling with serious maintenance problems. These issues have persisted for a long time, causing growing concern among local residents and sports enthusiasts.
Dual Purpose Now Undermined
The municipal corporation originally built these courts with two clear goals. They aimed to use the empty space beneath bridges effectively. At the same time, they wanted to create safe and accessible spots for young athletes and city residents to enjoy sports and stay active.
However, recent surveys and observations tell a different story. Conditions at these facilities show no signs of improvement. The situation remains stagnant and disappointing.
Specific Problems at Key Locations
A check at the basketball court near BRS Nagar and Southern Bypass revealed glaring deficiencies. The entry door was completely missing. The basketball net was also absent. Youngsters found no basketball available to play with.
The nearby badminton court faced similar neglect. Both the badminton net and pole were missing. No badminton rackets were available for anyone wanting to play the game.
Another basketball court near the Pakhowal Road bridge lacked essential equipment. The ring and basketball net were missing. During a visit, it was clear the court was not cleaned regularly. The floor was covered with dust and various litter.
Widespread Issues Across Multiple Courts
Two more sports courts near the Lakkad bridge are in a poor state. These courts offered badminton and basketball facilities to residents. The basketball court has no net or ball for players. The adjoining badminton court misses its net too.
This badminton court often sits empty. Sometimes local players use it for box cricket because the badminton net and rackets are missing.
Resident Concerns and Official Response
Local residents and sports enthusiasts express deep frustration. They worry about the current situation of these sports courts. Maintenance has been neglected for a long period. These areas were once vibrant spaces where youth and residents enjoyed sports facilities provided by authorities.
MC Commissioner Aditya Dachalwal (IAS) addressed the issue. He stated that XENs and other concerned officials recently visited the sports courts for inspection. They conducted regular repair assessments and made estimations. The commissioner confirmed he will check the status of the work again personally.
