Kochi Teacher Celebrates Retirement with Inspiring 11km Marathon Run
In a heartwarming and unconventional gesture, a retiring teacher in Kochi chose to bid farewell to her decades-long career with a marathon run, breaking away from the usual ceremonial send-offs. Shiny Benny, aged 56, a dedicated Malayalam teacher at St Teresa's Higher Secondary School in Ernakulam, embarked on an 11-kilometer journey from the school to her home in Nettoor, marking a unique end to her teaching tenure.
A Community-Supported Run
The run commenced at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, with Kochi Mayor V K Minimol flagging off the event. Shiny was accompanied by 24 fellow runners, including her supportive husband, Benny, all members of the local runners' group Souls of Kochi. The idea for this distinctive retirement celebration was suggested by a fellow group member, who proposed running home as a symbolic and healthy alternative to traditional functions.
The runners' group and her husband meticulously organized the event, setting up hydration points at Thykoodam to combat the intense heat during the run. This thoughtful preparation ensured a smooth and safe experience for all participants, highlighting the community spirit and camaraderie that defined Shiny's career.
Mixed Emotions and Future Aspirations
Speaking about her feelings, Shiny expressed a blend of happiness and sadness. "I am feeling mixed emotions at the moment. Although I am happy to conduct a retirement function in this manner, I am sad that I will not be a teacher at the school anymore, for which I have contributed a large part of my life, supporting students in their journey," she shared. Her dedication was evident in her role overseeing the school Kalolsavam for the past 25 years, during which the school consistently emerged as the overall best-performing institution in the district.
Balancing her passion for running with her teaching responsibilities had always been challenging due to work commitments. However, with retirement, Shiny looks forward to dedicating more time to her athletic pursuits. "I can now utilise more of my time practising for marathons. So far, I have only completed half marathons, and I have also not run a marathon abroad. In the years to come, I want to materialise that dream," she added, setting ambitious goals for her post-retirement life.
Promoting Health Awareness
Shiny's husband, Benny, emphasized that the couple mutually agreed on this unique retirement gesture to raise awareness about the health benefits of running. He noted that such an unconventional celebration could inspire more people to adopt running as a healthy lifestyle choice, spreading a positive message beyond the school community. This event not only celebrated Shiny's career but also served as a public endorsement of fitness and well-being.
In summary, Shiny Benny's retirement run stands as a testament to her dedication, both as an educator and a fitness enthusiast. It underscores the importance of health, community support, and innovative ways to mark life's milestones, leaving a lasting impact on all who witnessed it.
