Kila Raipur's Iconic Bullock Cart Races Return After Decade-Long Hiatus
Neither relentless rain nor a ten-year hiatus could extinguish the spirit of Kila Raipur's legendary bullock cart races. This weekend, the thunderous hooves and iconic carts that define the historic "Rural Olympics" will once again roar across the track, marking a triumphant return after a prolonged absence and a recent weather-induced postponement.
Event Details and Rescheduled Dates
Organisers have officially confirmed the revival of these iconic races, the very heart of the Kila Raipur Sports Festival, during its 86th edition. Originally scheduled for late January, the event was delayed due to heavy rains that rendered the turf unsuitable. Now, with the grounds meticulously rolled and prepared, the games are set to run from February 17 to 19. Officials anticipate a massive resurgence in spectator turnout, eager to witness the spectacle's long-awaited comeback.
Strict Veterinary Oversight and Animal Welfare
In a significant shift reflecting modern animal welfare standards, the Kila Raipur Sports Society has implemented a rigorous medical protocol. Gurinder Singh Grewal of the society stated that no bull will be permitted to compete without a valid health certificate issued by a registered Veterinary Officer within 72 hours of the race. A committee formed by the Ludhiana deputy commissioner will enforce all regulations.
The comprehensive safety measures include:
- Entry screening and continuous monitoring of all animals.
- Veterinary inspections as bulls disembark from vehicles to ensure fitness.
- Doctors stationed at both start and finish lines to examine bulls between rounds.
- A dedicated veterinary ambulance and first-aid team on-site for any animal injuries.
- Races limited to 18-20 seconds to minimise exertion.
Additionally, a first-aid desk led by an Assistant Civil Surgeon will handle human injuries, with water tankers, portable toilets, and food counters arranged for athletes and visitors.
High Stakes and Intense Competition
Organisers expect between 80 and 100 bullock carts to arrive from across Punjab and neighbouring Haryana, promising fierce competition. Significant prize money is at stake, with the first prize set at Rs 2 lakh and the second at Rs 1.5 lakh. Eight prizes will be awarded in the bullock cart category. Each heat will feature four carts racing simultaneously, overseen by a logistics team of 150 judges, linesmen, and volunteers. The event will be inaugurated by Punjab minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, with chief minister Bhagwant Mann expected on the final day.
A Village Reawakens to Its Historic Spirit
For Kila Raipur residents, the races' resumption heralds the return of the festival's true essence. "Before the races were stopped in 2014, the rush was so huge that people would climb eucalyptus trees just to get a view of the stadium," said Gurdeep Singh, a 50-year-old local villager. "Since then, that energy has been missing. We are sure the crowds will return now." Beyond racing, the games will feature kabaddi, hockey, athletics, and cycling, with organisers emphasising equal prize money for male and female competitors.
