Khelo India Tribal Games to Become Permanent Talent Pipeline in Chhattisgarh

According to officials, Chhattisgarh is likely to remain the permanent host for this initiative, which aims to systematically identify, train, and support promising sports talent from tribal communities.
Structured Scouting and Development Framework
Under the Khelo India talent identification and development vertical, the selection process is not confined to a single tournament. A dedicated committee actively scouts athletes at various competitions throughout the year. During the Tribal Games, committee representatives will conduct thorough assessments of participants to identify individuals with exceptional potential.
"Those selected may be called for further trials," a Deputy Director General (DDG) told TOI. "They can then be inducted as official Khelo India athletes or sent directly to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) for advanced training."
Comprehensive Support System for Athletes
The initiative provides a robust support structure for identified talent:
- Scholarships: Athletes chosen under the Khelo India program receive financial scholarships to support their training and education.
- Training Access: Selected athletes gain entry to premier national training facilities, including SAI National Centres of Excellence.
- Alternative Pathways: If the number of selected athletes is large or immediate placement at NCOEs is not feasible, they can be accommodated at SAI Training Centres, where they receive free, high-quality training.
Addressing Historical Inequities in Sports
SAI Deputy Director General Mayank Srivastava emphasized that this initiative was specifically launched to tackle the historical lack of sporting opportunities for certain sections of society, particularly in tribal regions. The program aims to bring more young people from these communities into constructive engagement through sports, providing them with viable career pathways and national recognition.
"Athletes chosen under Khelo India on the basis of their demonstrated talent are provided with comprehensive scholarships and dedicated training support," Shrivastava stated, highlighting the program's commitment to nurturing talent from the ground up.
