Union Ministers Inaugurate Rs 14-Crore Khelo India Sports Complex in Mandya

In a significant boost to sports infrastructure in Karnataka, Union Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and HD Kumaraswamy officially laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art multi-purpose indoor sports complex in Mandya on Saturday. The ambitious project, valued at Rs 14 crore, is being developed under the central government's flagship Khelo India initiative.

Project Details and Location

The new sports facility will be constructed on the campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences at VC Farm in Mandya. This strategic location aims to benefit both university students and the local community, providing modern amenities for various indoor sports activities. HD Kumaraswamy, who represents Mandya in the Lok Sabha, emphasized the project's importance for the district's development during the ceremony.

Ceremony and Cultural Significance

The foundation-laying event featured traditional bhoomi pooja rituals, followed by a unique welcome gesture for the ministers. They were honored with an enormous garland made entirely of jaggery, highlighting this local specialty of Mandya district and symbolizing the community's warm reception for the project.

Khelo India Vision and Objectives

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the gathering, outlining the broader goals of the Khelo India programme. "Khelo India is a comprehensive national initiative designed to rejuvenate sports culture at the grassroots level across India," Mandaviya stated. "This facility in Mandya represents our commitment to transforming India into a leading sporting nation by providing world-class infrastructure to young athletes."

Additional Welfare Initiative

Following the sports complex inauguration, the ministers oversaw another significant welfare measure. Electric vehicles were distributed to 388 persons with disabilities, demonstrating the government's dual focus on sports development and social inclusion. This distribution program aims to enhance mobility and independence for beneficiaries while promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

Impact and Future Prospects

The Mandya sports complex project is expected to:

  • Provide modern training facilities for local athletes
  • Host regional and national sporting events
  • Encourage youth participation in organized sports
  • Complement existing educational infrastructure at the agricultural university
  • Serve as a model for similar developments in other districts

This development marks a substantial investment in Karnataka's sports infrastructure and aligns with the central government's vision of promoting fitness and competitive sports throughout the country. The project timeline and specific sports disciplines to be accommodated will be announced by authorities in the coming weeks.
