Jenson Button has expressed his enthusiasm for the potential return of the Indian Grand Prix to the Formula 1 calendar. The former world champion stated that it would be great to see India back on the F1 schedule, highlighting the country's passion for motorsports.
Buddh International Circuit Awaits Revival
The Buddh International Circuit, located in Greater Noida, remains India's only FIA Grade 1 track since it was inaugurated in 2011. The circuit hosted the Indian Grand Prix for three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013, but the event was then dropped from the calendar due to financial and administrative issues.
Renewed Interest in Indian GP
Recent reports suggest that efforts are underway to revive the Indian Grand Prix. The track has undergone maintenance and upgrades to meet current F1 standards. Button, who raced at the circuit during its original stint, believes the venue has the potential to host a world-class event again.
Button's comments come amid growing speculation about Formula 1's expansion into new markets and the revival of classic venues. The sport has seen a surge in popularity in Asia, and India represents a significant untapped market.
- The Buddh International Circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke and features a mix of high-speed straights and technical corners.
- Sebastian Vettel won all three editions of the Indian Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013.
- The track's contract with F1 expired after the 2013 race and was not renewed.
Button, who retired from F1 in 2016, added that the Indian fans were among the most passionate he had ever seen. "The atmosphere during those races was electric, and I am sure it would be the same if the Grand Prix returns," he said.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the optimism, several hurdles remain. The high cost of hosting an F1 race, along with the need for government support and corporate sponsorship, are key factors. However, with the sport's growing global appeal and India's booming economy, the return of the Indian Grand Prix seems more plausible than ever.
