India wrapped up its participation at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships with a total of five medals, including one gold, to finish sixth in the overall medal standings. The standout performance came from Tejaswin Shankar, who clinched the men’s heptathlon gold, marking India’s sole gold medal at the prestigious event.
Tejaswin Shankar’s Record-Breaking Heptathlon Triumph
Tejaswin Shankar delivered a masterclass in the heptathlon, scoring an impressive 5993 points to secure the gold medal. This achievement shattered his own national indoor record of 5650 points, which he had set back in 2021. Shankar dominated the competition from the outset, maintaining his lead across all seven events throughout the two-day contest.
On the final day, Shankar showcased his versatility and endurance. He began by clocking 8.02 seconds in the 60m hurdles, earning 977 points. Following this, he cleared 4.20 metres in the pole vault, adding 673 points to his tally. He concluded with a strong performance in the 1000m race, finishing in 2:43.91, which propelled his total score to the winning 5993 points.
Shankar, who is already India’s national record holder in the outdoor decathlon and won a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games, further solidified his reputation as one of India’s premier multi-event athletes on the international stage.

India’s medal haul was bolstered by several other commendable performances. Pooja secured a silver medal in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.87 metres, demonstrating her skill and consistency in the event.
In the men’s shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor earned a silver medal with a season-best throw of 20.05 metres, narrowly missing out on the gold. His effort highlighted his competitive spirit and technical prowess.
