Thousands of spectators gathered at Gangapur Dam in Nashik on Thursday witnessed aviation history as the Indian Air Force's elite Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team (SKAT) performed its first-ever display over the city. The event, part of the two-day Nashik Festival organized jointly by the district administration and the IAF, created an unforgettable spectacle that left the audience in awe.

The air show featured nine iconic red-and-white Hawk Mk-132 jets commanded by Group Captain Ajay Dasharathi, executing a series of breathtaking maneuvers that demonstrated exceptional skill and coordination. The most dramatic moment occurred when two jets approached each other from opposite directions at speeds exceeding 600 kmph, crossing with a mere five-meter clearance that drew thunderous cheers from the captivated crowd.

Shreyas Deshmukh, an engineering student from Jalgaon, expressed his excitement: "I have only ever watched their shows on television. Seeing this in person is the opportunity of a lifetime."

Rajesh Bhalerao, a Class IX student from Dindori taluka who attended with classmates, shared his perspective: "I visited Exercise Topchi at the School of Artillery a few days ago, but this is something else. This life looks challenging, and I want to live it."
Honoring Aviation Heritage and Regional Connections
In a special tribute to the region's aviation legacy, the Surya Kiran team performed a formation dedicated to the legendary MiG-21 aircraft. This nod held particular significance as the MiG-21, which was inducted in 1963 and decommissioned in September 2025, was famously built and overhauled at the HAL facility in nearby Ozar, creating a meaningful connection between the display and Nashik's aerospace history.
Throughout the performance, the air resonated not only with the powerful roar of jet engines but also with patriotic chants of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram" from the enthusiastic crowd. While most attendees were Nashik residents, the event also attracted visitors from Mumbai and Pune, demonstrating its regional appeal.

The district administration has announced scheduling adjustments for the second day of the festival. Originally planned for 10 am, the Surya Kiran Aero Show on Friday will now commence at noon due to weather conditions in the Gangapur Dam area. Officials have appealed to citizens to arrive early and ensure they are seated at the venue by 10:45 am to facilitate smooth entry and maintain safety protocols.
