Formula E and FIA Unveil Revolutionary GEN4 Electric Race Car in France

The future of electric motorsport took a dramatic leap forward as Formula E and the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) officially unveiled the GEN4 car during its debut track run. The exclusive event was held at Circuit Paul Ricard in the picturesque south of France, where a select audience witnessed the groundbreaking vehicle in action for the very first time.

GEN4 Set to Redefine Racing from 2026/27 Season

This revolutionary machine is scheduled to officially compete starting from the 2026/27 season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Season 13 promises to deliver an unprecedented level of spectacle, featuring closer racing, significantly higher speeds, and more dramatic on-track action than ever before witnessed in the series.

Unprecedented Performance Specifications

How fast is the GEN4 car? The numbers are truly staggering. The GEN4 delivers a remarkable 50 percent more power in race mode compared to the current GEN3 Evo car, with the capability to exceed speeds of 335 kilometers per hour. Its acceleration is equally impressive, rocketing from 0 to 100 kph in approximately 1.8 seconds and from 0 to 200 kph in a mere 4.4 seconds.

Overall, the GEN4 is 1.5 seconds faster than its predecessor and, on average, a full 10 seconds quicker per lap than the GEN3 Evo. When utilizing Attack Mode, the GEN4 produces up to 600 kW of power, representing a massive 71 percent increase in base output over the GEN3 Evo. Notably, it also stands as the only single-seater race car in the world equipped with permanent all-wheel drive.

Grand Unveiling at Circuit Paul Ricard

The demonstration event in Le Castellet saw attendance from all Formula E teams and manufacturers, including major automotive players such as Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Mahindra, Lola Cars, and Stellantis. Stellantis was represented by Opel, which is preparing to join the Formula E grid in the upcoming season.

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds expressed immense enthusiasm, stating, "GEN4 isn't just a car, it's a bold declaration of our ambition. Seeing what it can do on track for the first time is a real milestone for Formula E. We are now delivering performance levels that were thought impossible for electric vehicles just five years ago."

He continued, "The step up in performance is immediately clear, from the speed and power to the way it delivers on track, and there was a genuine buzz among everyone who witnessed it. This is a hugely exciting moment for the championship as we head into the 2026/27 season, and a clear signal of where we are headed."

Dodds added, "This is just the beginning, as its refinement is now in the hands of our manufacturers - Porsche, Jaguar, Stellantis, Nissan, Lola Cars and Mahindra - to push development to even higher limits ahead of its racing debut. GEN4 isn't just an evolution; it's a step change in innovation and performance that will redefine motorsport for years to come."

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also shared his perspective, remarking, "The new GEN4 Formula E car marks a significant step forward for electric racing, setting a new global benchmark for performance, innovation and sustainability. It is not simply a fast car; it is a statement of intent about the future of this technology. I am proud that the FIA and its partners are leading this vision."

He further emphasized, "Collaboration has been central to the development of this car, and it will continue to be at the heart of a new era for the championship - one defined by greater performance, road relevance and excitement. We are redefining what is possible alongside some of the world's biggest automotive manufacturers using the laboratory of motorsport."

Groundbreaking Sustainability and Safety Features

What makes the GEN4 even more special? Beyond its blistering performance, the GEN4 car represents a monumental achievement in sustainability. It is the world's first racing car that is 100 percent recyclable, incorporating at least 20 percent recycled materials across its key components.

  • The tyres are manufactured from 65 percent natural and recycled materials, including 30 percent certified natural rubber.
  • The battery system contains no rare earth minerals, further reducing environmental impact.

Formula E maintains its leadership in environmental responsibility, remaining the first global sport certified to the BSI Net Zero Pathway Standard and the first motorsport series to achieve B Corp certification.

In addition to its eco-credentials, the GEN4 features enhanced safety measures designed to protect drivers while intensifying the competitive challenge:

  1. A wider cockpit has been implemented to increase hand clearance for drivers.
  2. Power steering is included to help mitigate steering loads during impacts.
  3. Improved adjustability in the driving position allows for better driver comfort and control.

The introduction of the GEN4 marks a transformative moment for electric motorsport, blending unprecedented performance with revolutionary sustainability standards that set a new benchmark for the entire automotive industry.
