Basketball Beginnings and Volleyball Transition
According to the Assyrian International News Agency, Doreen's athletic journey began with basketball at age 15, which remained her first sporting love for years. Reflecting on this period, she shared: "I traveled outside of Iraq to compete in international tournaments. When I was younger, my first love was basketball, and I even played for the national team."
However, she noted the limited opportunities for development and higher-level competition within Iraqi basketball. "Volleyball, on the other hand, has opened many doors and given me the chance to achieve more. My younger self would be proud that I embraced those opportunities, worked hard and pushed myself to grow as both a player and a person," Doreen explained regarding her transition to volleyball.
This strategic shift has proven transformative, allowing her talents to flourish on an international stage while maintaining her academic commitments and advocacy work.
