Dharwad Sports Complex Inauguration Set for March 14

Dharwad's Major Sports Infrastructure Boost with New Complex Inauguration

Dharwad is poised to take a significant leap forward in enhancing its sports infrastructure with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art multi-facility sports complex and an international-standard swimming pool near Court Circle on March 14. This development marks a transformative moment for the city's athletic landscape, aimed at fostering sporting excellence and community engagement.

Inauguration Details and Key Attendees

The facility will be formally inaugurated by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, and Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, on March 14 at 3:30 PM. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, along with other elected representatives from the district, will be present at the ceremony, underscoring the project's importance at both state and national levels.

Features and Design of the Sports Complex

The newly developed complex is designed to become a pivotal centre for nurturing sporting talent in the region. A key highlight is the international-standard swimming pool, which meets competitive specifications, enabling swimmers from Dharwad and neighbouring areas to train under professional conditions. The complex also includes separate pools for children and adults, ensuring accessibility for all age groups.

Constructed largely using modern steel technology, the facility boasts technical guidance from IIT Delhi and the School of Planning and Architecture, ensuring adherence to global standards. It features dedicated spaces for multiple indoor sports, supported by spectator galleries, equipment storage areas, and athlete rooms, creating a comprehensive hub for athletic development.

Project History and Funding Challenges

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi laid the foundation stone for this project in 2018, with a vision to redevelop the old swimming facility into an international-level pool and a modern indoor sports hub. However, construction faced a major setback when it came to a complete halt due to a shortage of funds. The project regained momentum only after sustained public demand led to the mobilisation of Rs 50 crore through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions from NMDC and ONGC, highlighting the role of community advocacy and corporate support in public infrastructure.

Multi-Purpose Facilities and Community Impact

Designed as a multi-purpose sports hub, the G+3 complex includes parking on the ground floor, with upper floors housing courts for kabaddi, badminton, and judo, gyms for men and women, a canteen, equipment stores, and rooms for trainers and doctors. In addition to the swimming facility, the sports complex offers multipurpose play areas and supporting infrastructure aimed at encouraging year-round sporting activities.

The venue is strategically designed to host tournaments, training camps, and community sporting events, creating ample opportunities for young athletes from Dharwad and neighbouring districts. Officials emphasize that this new infrastructure will not only promote sports participation but also help identify and groom talented athletes capable of competing at district, state, and national levels, thereby elevating the region's athletic profile.

Additional Event and Coordination Efforts

Later in the evening, at 5:30 PM, Union Minister Mandaviya will attend the valedictory function of the Dharwad Parliamentary Constituency Sports Festival at the grounds of Karnatak Science College, where he will distribute prizes to the winners. Deputy Commissioner Snehal has directed officers from various departments to ensure that both programmes are conducted hassle-free with proper coordination, reflecting the administrative commitment to seamless execution.

This inauguration represents a milestone in Dharwad's journey toward becoming a sports hub, with the complex set to inspire a new generation of athletes and strengthen the city's cultural and recreational fabric.
