New Delhi witnessed a breathtaking inauguration ceremony for the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh on Friday evening at Chhatrasal Stadium. The event commenced with a stunning aerial performance where a young girl danced gracefully while suspended from a giant balloon, carrying the festival baton high above the stadium. Her fluid movements captivated thousands of spectators before she descended to hand the baton to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, officially declaring the games open.

The inauguration ceremony featured a ceremonial march-past led by Delhi's para-athletes, setting an inclusive tone for the sporting festival. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, accompanied by Education Minister Ashish Sood and former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, who serves as the event's brand ambassador, greeted participants from an open vehicle as they toured the stadium. The presence of Olympic medallist and Khel Ratna awardee Ravi Dahiya, along with Paralympic medallist Sharad Kumar, added star power to the occasion.

Gupta highlighted the current government's efforts since taking office last year, noting that nearly Rs 33 crore in long-pending prize money, which had remained unpaid for almost three decades, has now been disbursed to athletes. "We are not only accelerating development in Delhi but also creating new opportunities for young people," she affirmed.
Education Minister Ashish Sood described the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh as a people's movement toward establishing the city as India's sports capital. "This marks the beginning of a new dawn for sports in Delhi," he proclaimed. "Every local akhada and neighbourhood stadium will now become a training ground for future global champions."
Sood emphasized the government's priority of strengthening the entire sports ecosystem, from stadium infrastructure to comprehensive support systems for athletes. "Delhi is not just returning to sports; it is preparing to lead," he stated. "A strong sports culture is a pillar of a strong city. By investing in fitness, discipline and competitive spirit, we are building a more confident Delhi."
Month-Long Sporting Festival Across Multiple Venues
The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh is scheduled to run for an entire month across 16 stadiums and sports complexes throughout the city. Key venues include:

- Chhatrasal Stadium
- Pehladpur Sports Complex
- East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex
- Rajiv Gandhi Stadium
Organizers anticipate participation from nearly 30,000 athletes, with over 15,000 already registered through the official portal. The event will feature athletes from Delhi University and GGSIPU, alongside registered sports clubs, academies, and associations, competing on an open, inclusive platform designed to provide everyone with opportunities to showcase their talent.

Competitions will span seven key disciplines:
- Athletics
- Football
- Wrestling across 10 weight categories
- Basketball
- Volleyball
- Kabaddi
- Squash (covering singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events)
Track-and-field events will range from 100m to 3,000m races, complemented by field events including long jump, high jump, shot put, and javelin throw, promising to thrill spectators while testing the limits of Delhi's budding athletes.
Prize Structure and Inaugural Festivities
The event features substantial prize money to recognize athletic excellence:
- Team Events: Gold medal winners receive Rs 1,75,000, silver medalists get Rs 1,51,000, and bronze winners are awarded Rs 1,31,000
- Individual Events: Gold, silver, and bronze medallists receive Rs 11,000, Rs 9,000, and Rs 7,000 respectively
The grand march-past during the launch event featured over 1,000 participants, including CWSN athletes, school bands, Nashik dhol performers, and players representing Delhi's universities and sports associations.
