Cheog Village's Ice-Skating Rink Ignites Sporting Surge in Shimla
In a remarkable display of community spirit and sporting ambition, a beautiful ice-skating rink constructed by residents in the small Cheog village near Shimla has sparked a wave of athletic success within just one year. Local children have embraced this new sport with remarkable enthusiasm, quickly making their mark at both national and international levels.
Rudrveer Gangta Leads the Charge with Asian Bronze
The brightest star to emerge from this grassroots initiative is nine-year-old Rudrveer Gangta, who clinched a bronze medal at the Asian Championship last year and secured multiple medals in national competitions. His achievements highlight the rapid progress enabled by the village's dedication to providing new sporting opportunities.
Pradeep Kanwar, vice-president of the state's ice skating association, emphasized the significance of this development. "Many others have represented the state at the national level and in Khelo India competitions last year. It's a big achievement considering the sports facility came up just a year back," he said, underscoring the impressive timeline of success.
Community Effort Creates International-Standard Facility
The rink was built by Cheog villagers to offer children in the area a novel sporting avenue. Sohan Thakur, a local resident, explained the transformation: "This ground was used for sports like volleyball and badminton. As temperatures here stay quite low in winters, we saw an opportunity to convert it into an ice skating rink." Currently, around 80 children are training at the rink, with the skating season extending from December to beyond mid-February, providing a substantial window for practice and development.
The rink meets international standards in size, and its construction has been validated by the skaters' impressive performances in such a short span. Kanwar noted that government assistance could further enhance this facility. "If the salary of the coach training the children is taken care of by the government, it will be a significant help," he stated.
Potential for Tourism and All-Weather Expansion
Beyond sports, the rink holds promise for boosting local tourism. Kanwar highlighted the potential benefits of converting it into an all-weather facility. "An all-weather ice skating rink will attract a lot of tourists and ice skating enthusiasts throughout the year. Besides, big sporting events could also be held. All this will have a massive impact on tourism," he added, pointing to broader economic and cultural advantages for the region.
This initiative in Cheog village exemplifies how community-driven projects can foster talent and create lasting impacts, setting a precedent for rural sports development in India.
