Chandigarh Golfer Karandeep Kocchar Wins Maiden IGPL Title in Dubai, Eyes Colombo
Chandigarh's Karandeep Kocchar wins IGPL Dubai, targets Colombo

In a significant career milestone, 26-year-old professional golfer Karandeep Kocchar from Chandigarh has secured his maiden Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) championship. Kocchar triumphed at the IGPL Invitational held at the prestigious Ernie Els Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, marking a high point in his burgeoning career.

Dubai Victory: A Strategic Win

The young golfer showcased remarkable skill and composure to edge out competitors Veer Ganapathy and Pukhraj Singh. Over the course of the three-round tournament, Kocchar finished with an impressive overall score of nine-under par. This stellar performance earned him a winning purse of more than Rs 22.50 lakh.

Reflecting on his victory, Kocchar described it as a special win achieved despite not being at his absolute best. "The experience of playing earlier at Ernie Els Club came in handy for me," he stated. He credited his success to strategic play, noting the challenging conditions on the final day where flags were placed on difficult slopes. "My focus was to hit the ball in the green and to try for birdie or par to have a chance at the title," Kocchar explained, highlighting his tactical approach to the game.

Building on a Successful Year

Kocchar's victory in Dubai is the latest in a series of accomplishments in 2025. Just last month, in November, he claimed his first international title by winning the Asian Development Tour's $125,000 Egypt Golf Series-Red Sea Open. There, he carded a stunning 19-under to defeat England's Matt Killen, pocketing approximately Rs 19.3 lakh in prize money.

This international win was particularly consequential as it secured Kocchar his Asian Tour Card for the next year. The golfer views this as a major stepping stone. "The ADT title win... was a big morale booster for me. I believe I have in me to win an Asian Tour title and that will be my aim for the next year," he asserted. His ambitious plans for the upcoming season also include attempting to qualify for the US Open, schedule permitting.

The IGPL Journey and Future Focus

Karandeep Kocchar was one of the 17 professional players who signed with the inaugural edition of the Indian Golf Premier League. His participation in the league was not without controversy, as he faced a temporary suspension from the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) for joining the IGPL, a suspension later stayed by the Delhi High Court.

Despite the PGTI launching its own league, Kocchar remains committed to the IGPL circuit. He praised the IGPL format, which features three rounds with no cut, ensuring every participant earns a share of the prize money. "IGPL has been an exciting league... There are also amateur as well as women golfers taking part and the talent pool is much diverse," he remarked.

With the Dubai trophy now in his possession, Kocchar's immediate sight is set on the next challenge. He has already left for the IGPL Invitational in Colombo, Sri Lanka. "It's good to have the win under my belt and the focus now is to finish the year on a high with a win at IGPL Invitational Colombo," said the determined golfer, aiming to cap off a remarkable year with another victory.

Kocchar, who began playing golf encouraged by his grandfather Dr. G.S. Kochhar, has a decorated past including winning both individual and team titles at the 2022 National Games. His journey from Chandigarh to international fairways continues to inspire, as he carries the hopes of Indian golf onto the Asian Tour and beyond.
