Chandigarh Golf Club's New Leadership Charts Ambitious Reform Course
In a significant development for one of North India's premier golfing institutions, Major Rajinder Singh Lally Virk (retd) has assumed leadership of the Chandigarh Golf Club with a comprehensive 100-day reform agenda. The newly elected president secured his position with a decisive victory, defeating his opponent by 304 votes in what has been described as the largest winning margin in recent club history.
Professional Course Management Takes Center Stage
The cornerstone of Virk's agenda revolves around elevating the club's golfing facilities through professional management. The newly elected president emphasized that improving course maintenance and playing conditions would be immediate priorities. Plans include appointing professional consultants to oversee course management and enhance the overall golfing experience for members.
"The mandate reflects members' desire for a more transparent, accountable and progressive club administration," Virk stated in an exclusive interview. "We will keep the club community informed at every step, and I remain fully accessible to members for ideas, suggestions and feedback."
Governance Reforms and Digital Transformation
A substantial portion of the 100-day plan focuses on governance reforms designed to increase accountability and transparency. Key proposals include:
- Amending club bylaws to extend the managing committee's tenure to two years
- Implementing separate elections for the club captain position
- Introducing seamless digital voting systems
- Regularizing and digitizing Annual General Meetings
- Establishing a model code of conduct to keep election months free from official party activities
Digital transformation will accompany these structural changes, with greater utilization of online platforms for AGMs and member-related processes to improve accessibility and operational efficiency.
Chandigarh Golf League Review and Member Welfare Initiatives
The new administration has identified the Chandigarh Golf League as another critical area requiring attention. Virk announced plans to refine the league format through stakeholder consultations, with particular focus on handicapping systems, scheduling improvements, and enhanced transparency measures.
"The aim is to ensure satisfaction for all members, both league participants and regular players," he explained regarding the league reforms.
Beyond golf-specific improvements, the agenda addresses several long-standing civic issues within the club premises:
- A dedicated team will propose and implement sustainable parking solutions
- Caddy welfare initiatives will improve hut facilities and review working conditions
- Infrastructure enhancements will benefit all club members and staff
New Managing Committee Structure
The election also resulted in the formation of a new managing committee, with twelve members securing positions through member voting. Key appointments include:
- Dr Atul Sachdev as Senior Vice President and Chandigarh Golf League coordinator
- JS Toor as Vice President overseeing entertainment and legal affairs
- Alamgir Grewal as Club Captain and greens subcommittee chair
- Amarbir Singh Lehal as Secretary responsible for HRD and new construction
- Brigadier TS Mundi as Treasurer managing finance, food and bar, discipline, and IT/digitalization
Other committee members will oversee additional functional areas of club operations, creating a comprehensive leadership structure to implement the ambitious reform agenda.
The 100-day plan represents a significant shift toward modernization and member-centric governance at the Chandigarh Golf Club. With professional management, digital transformation, and welfare initiatives forming the pillars of this agenda, the club appears poised for substantial improvements in both operational efficiency and member experience.
