UFC Contender Arman Tsarukyan Removed from Flight Over Safety Violation at LAX
What began as a routine journey for top-ranked UFC lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan quickly escalated into a disruptive incident at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on April 16. Tsarukyan, en route to Philadelphia for an upcoming fight, was among four passengers escorted off an American Airlines flight before departure due to a breach of critical safety protocols.
Incident Details and Airline Statement
A video circulating online captured Tsarukyan and his companions being removed from Flight 513. Initial speculation suggested phone usage during takeoff preparations, but American Airlines clarified the actual cause in a statement to MMA Fighting. The airline confirmed the flight returned to the gate because passengers refused to adhere to federal regulations and crew directives.
American Airlines emphasized: "Safety is our top priority, and we expect our customers to comply with crew member instructions while on board our aircraft, which include staying seated while the aircraft is taxiing."
Reports indicate that Tsarukyan and his group were standing in the aisle while the plane was taxiing toward the runway. Despite repeated requests from the crew to sit in their assigned seats, they did not comply, prompting the pilot to abort the departure and return to the gate.
Tsarukyan's Response and Travel Continuation
Following the removal, Tsarukyan addressed the situation humorously on Instagram, posting, "kicked off commercial, I guess private it is." Later, while boarding another flight, he added, "I hope they’re not going to kick me out from this plane. OK guys, I’ll be five hours in Philadelphia."
Despite the setback, Tsarukyan successfully continued his travel plans. He is scheduled to compete against Urijah Faber in the co-main event at RAF 8, marking his fourth appearance in the promotion after previous bouts with fighters like Lance Palmer and Georgio Poullas.
Broader Implications for Airline Safety
This incident, which involved no violence, underscores the stringent enforcement of safety rules by airlines, particularly during critical phases like taxiing. It serves as a stark reminder that even minor actions, such as standing in the aisle at an inappropriate time, can lead to significant consequences, including flight delays and removals.
The plane eventually proceeded to Philadelphia without further issues, highlighting the airline's commitment to maintaining safety standards above all else.
