Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi for securing a bronze medal at the prestigious FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship held in Doha. This commendation came on Wednesday, following Erigaisi's strong performance that culminated in a podium finish on Tuesday.
PM Modi's Tribute to a Chess Prodigy
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi celebrated the young chess star's accomplishment. He described Erigaisi's success as a significant step forward for India in the global chess arena. The Prime Minister emphasized that Arjun's dedication, strategic skill, and calm demeanor serve as a powerful inspiration for the nation's youth. His message read: "India's strides in chess continue! Congratulations to Arjun Erigaisi for winning the Bronze at the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship in Doha, following his bronze medal in FIDE Rapid Chess Championship recently. His skills, patience and passion are exemplary. His successes will continue to inspire our youth."
A Bittersweet Semifinal and a Historic Double
The path to the bronze medal was marked by both triumph and heartbreak for the 22-year-old Grandmaster. Erigaisi displayed exceptional form throughout the qualification rounds. After a stellar first day where he defeated top players including the legendary Magnus Carlsen and his future semifinal opponent, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, he entered the second day as the sole leader.
He maintained his composure, winning four games and drawing two in the remaining six rounds to finish the qualifiers with 15 points and secure a spot in the knockout stage. However, in the semifinal, he faced a formidable challenge from Uzbek top player and 2021 World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
Despite having beaten Abdusattorov earlier in the tournament, Erigaisi could not replicate that success in the knockout match. He suffered a tough loss with a score of 2.5-0.5, ending his campaign for the gold. Despite the semifinal setback, Erigaisi's achievement is monumental. He returns to India with two World Championship bronze medals—one in rapid chess and now one in blitz—a rare double feat accomplished by very few chess players worldwide.
Solidifying India's Position on the Global Chess Map
Arjun Erigaisi's consistent performance at the highest level underscores the growing depth of chess talent in India. His ability to compete and win against the world's best, including icons like Magnus Carlsen, signals a new era for Indian chess. The recognition from the country's leadership further highlights the sport's rising profile and the government's support for sporting excellence.
This bronze medal at the World Blitz Championship, coming close on the heels of his rapid chess bronze, cements Erigaisi's status as one of India's leading chess ambassadors. His journey serves as a testament to hard work and strategic brilliance, promising to motivate a new generation of chess enthusiasts across the nation.
