India's 2030 Commonwealth Games to Feature Approximately 17 Sporting Disciplines
New Delhi: The 2030 Commonwealth Games in India will showcase around 17 sporting disciplines, according to a recent announcement by Commonwealth Sport president Donald Rukare. Speaking at a media gathering on Friday, Rukare confirmed that the final roster of events is scheduled to be officially confirmed by the middle of 2027.
Final Sports Program to Be Announced by Mid-2027
Rukare stated, "We should soon be able to announce a full board of about 16 to 17 sport programmes that will feature here in 2030. By the end of the first half of 2027, we should be able to give you a definite answer in terms of sports and where we start. And this will carry forward even for future CWGs." This timeline allows for extensive planning and coordination with various stakeholders.
Potential Inclusion of Previously Excluded Disciplines
A significant highlight of the upcoming games is the potential inclusion of sports that were excluded from previous editions but hold strong emotional value for India. Organizers in Ahmedabad have been actively aiming to feature a comprehensive roster, including disciplines that were axed from the Birmingham 2022 Games and will not appear in the Glasgow edition later this year.
In 2022, shooting and archery were notably dropped, while nine key sports, including badminton, cricket, hockey, shooting, squash, table tennis, and wrestling, among others, have been excluded from the Glasgow Games. This move has sparked discussions about restoring these popular events for the Indian-hosted edition.
Cricket, Hockey, and Yogasana Among Likely Additions
Among the disciplines likely to make the cut are men's and women's cricket in the T20 format and hockey, two of the three "core team sports" currently under consideration. Their inclusion reflects both their immense popularity in India and their commercial viability, which could enhance the games' appeal and viewership.
Additionally, Yogasana is being pitched as a medal event in the traditional sports category, highlighting India's cultural heritage and promoting wellness on a global stage. This addition aligns with efforts to diversify the sports program and cater to local interests.
India's Capacity to Host a Diverse Range of Sports
Rukare emphasized India's capability to host a wide range of sports, stating, "The capacity to host a wide range of sports in India is evident. Once we have finished all the necessary consultations with the IOA, international federations, and with the host organizers and, looking at what's available, we are going to have a very vibrant, responsive programme that caters not only for what is a very important constituency here in India, but for our 74 territories."
This statement underscores the collaborative efforts involved in finalizing the sports lineup, ensuring it meets both national and international expectations. The consultations aim to balance tradition with innovation, creating a dynamic event that resonates across the Commonwealth.
The announcement has generated excitement among sports enthusiasts and stakeholders, as India prepares to host the prestigious event. With a focus on inclusivity and cultural relevance, the 2030 Commonwealth Games are poised to be a landmark occasion in the nation's sporting history.
