Yogi Adityanath Targets SP, Congress Over 'Ram Bhakti'
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party and Congress, accusing them of hypocrisy over their recent expressions of devotion to Lord Ram. Addressing a public gathering in Lucknow, the CM said, "Those who once fired at Ram devotees are now speaking of Ram bhakti. This is a betrayal of the faith."
Historical Context of the Allegations
Adityanath's remarks refer to past incidents during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s, when karsevaks (Ram devotees) were allegedly fired upon by state governments led by the Samajwadi Party and Congress. The CM did not provide specific evidence but reiterated the BJP's long-standing criticism of these parties for opposing the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He claimed that the opposition's current pro-Ram stance is merely a political gimmick ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Political Reactions and Implications
The Samajwadi Party quickly dismissed the CM's allegations. SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, "Yogi ji is trying to divert attention from his government's failures on law and order, unemployment, and inflation. Our respect for Lord Ram is not new; it is the BJP that has politicized the Ram temple for electoral gains." Congress state president Ajay Kumar Lallu also criticized the CM, stating, "The BJP has no moral right to talk about Ram bhakti when they have done nothing for the poor and farmers."
The exchange comes amid a broader political battle in Uttar Pradesh, where the ruling BJP is seeking to consolidate Hindu votes ahead of the 2024 general elections. The opposition, particularly the SP-Congress alliance, has been trying to project a softer Hindutva image to counter the BJP's dominance. However, Adityanath's sharp remarks indicate that the BJP will not let the opposition claim the Ram narrative easily.
Government's Stand on Development
In the same speech, CM Yogi also highlighted his government's achievements, including infrastructure projects, welfare schemes, and improved law and order. He claimed that Uttar Pradesh has transformed from a "goonda raj" to a state with better governance. "We have given the state a new identity, and we will continue to work for the welfare of all sections," he said.
The opposition has consistently challenged these claims, pointing to rising crime rates, farmer distress, and lack of employment opportunities. The SP and Congress have also accused the BJP of dividing society on religious lines.
Looking Ahead
As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, the Ram temple issue remains a potent political tool. The Supreme Court's 2019 verdict paving the way for the temple construction was a major victory for the BJP. However, the opposition's attempts to reclaim the Ram narrative could pose a challenge. Adityanath's latest salvo suggests that the BJP is determined to keep the issue alive and frame the opposition as anti-Hindu.
