Vinod Tawde Makes Political Comeback with Rajya Sabha Nomination

In a significant development for Maharashtra's political landscape, senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde is poised to return to electoral politics after a seven-year hiatus. The Bharatiya Janata Party's central election committee on Wednesday named Tawde as one of its four candidates from Maharashtra for the crucial March 16 Rajya Sabha elections, marking a notable resurgence in his political career.

Strategic Reward for Bihar Election Performance

Political analysts suggest Tawde's nomination serves as a strategic reward for his instrumental role in the BJP's performance during the 2025 Bihar assembly elections. During that crucial electoral battle, Tawde was appointed as the party's in-charge for Bihar, where the BJP emerged as the single largest party by securing 89 out of 243 seats. This successful assignment appears to have restored confidence in his political capabilities among the party leadership.

A Political Journey Marked by Ups and Downs

Vinod Tawde's political trajectory has been characterized by both steady ascension and unexpected setbacks. He rose methodically through the ranks of the BJP's Mumbai unit, progressing from president to opposition leader in the legislative council. However, his fortunes took a dramatic turn in 2019 when he was denied a ticket to contest the Maharashtra assembly elections that year.

During his first term as MLA from 2014 to 2019, Tawde represented the Borivli constituency, traditionally considered a BJP stronghold. He also served as a minister in the first government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Following his exclusion from the 2019 state elections, Tawde was accommodated as a party general secretary based in New Delhi, effectively removing him from active Maharashtra politics.

Controversy and Continued Political Assignments

The 2024 assembly elections saw renewed speculation about Tawde's potential return to state politics, but those hopes were temporarily dashed when he became embroiled in controversy. On the eve of the elections, workers from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi detained him at a Vasai hotel, accusing him of distributing cash. Despite this incident, the VBA failed to win any assembly seats in the Vasai-Virar region.

Undeterred by this controversy, the BJP leadership continued to recognize Tawde's political strategy expertise. The party placed him in charge of five states that went to polls in 2022: Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Manipur. The BJP secured victories in all these states except Punjab, further validating Tawde's organizational capabilities.

Current Political Landscape and Future Responsibilities

With seven Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra set to become vacant in April, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance finds itself in a strong position to ensure the election of all six of its nominees, thanks to its commanding strength of over 230 MLAs in the state assembly. While the BJP is filing nominations for four seats, the remaining two nominations will come from alliance partners Shiv Sena and NCP, whose candidates had not been announced as of late Wednesday evening.

Following his nomination, Tawde expressed profound gratitude to the party leadership, stating his commitment to "fulfilling this new responsibility with complete dedication and loyalty." His political responsibilities continue to expand, with the BJP recently placing him in charge of the upcoming Kerala assembly elections, following his successful Bihar assignment.

Complete List of BJP Candidates

The BJP's complete list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections from Maharashtra includes:

  • Vinod Tawde - Former Maharashtra minister and BJP strategist
  • Ramdas Athawale - Union Minister of State for Social Welfare from ally RPI(A)
  • Maya Ivnate - Former Nagpur mayor and sitting corporator
  • Ramrao Wadkute - BJP member since 2019 from the Dhangar community

Thursday marks the final day for filing nominations for these crucial elections, setting the stage for what promises to be an important chapter in Maharashtra's political narrative and Vinod Tawde's revitalized career.
