The sustained agitation by power sector employees in Uttar Pradesh against proposed privatisation has reached a significant milestone, completing 400 days of continuous protest. On Thursday, employees, contract workers, junior engineers, and engineers across all state power corporations observed a 'Protest Day' to mark the occasion.
Black Armbands and Mass Gatherings in Varanasi
Demonstrating their resolve, the protesting staff wore black armbands throughout the day. They organised two major gatherings in Varanasi's Bhikharipur area—one during the lunch break and another after official office hours. The protests are being coordinated under the banner of the Uttar Pradesh Vidyut Karmachari Sangharsh Samiti.
Contradiction Between Minister's Assurance and Corporation's Actions
Addressing the gathering, speakers highlighted a critical contradiction. They recalled that UP Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma had stated in the state assembly that no decision on privatising the power sector had been taken. The employees argued that following this assurance, the UP Power Corporation management should have immediately halted all privatisation-related processes.
They emphasised that such a step is essential to foster a healthy and trustworthy work environment within the state's energy corporations. The protesters expressed frustration that despite the minister's statement, the corporatisation and privatisation drives appear to be continuing.
Allegations of Harassment and Commitment to Consumers
The speakers levelled serious allegations against the power corporation management, accusing them of harassing workers who are participating in peaceful protests against privatisation. They stated that the management's actions are creating an atmosphere of intimidation.
Despite the prolonged agitation, the employees sought to reassure the public. They stressed that power employees are ensuring consumers do not face any difficulties in supply and services, underlining their professional commitment even as they fight for their rights and the sector's public ownership.
The 400-day mark underscores the depth of resistance against the privatisation move within one of India's most crucial infrastructure sectors. The protest in Varanasi, a key city in Uttar Pradesh, signals that the agitation remains strong and organised, with employees prepared for a long haul.
