The Uttar Pradesh government has officially declared a public holiday for Saturday, December 27, 2025. The holiday is on account of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh Guru. Consequently, all state government offices, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions across UP will remain closed for the day.
Official Executive Order Amends Holiday List
The decision was formalized through an executive order issued by the state's Department of General Administration. District Magistrate Arvind Bangari confirmed the directive. The order amends the official list of holidays for the year 2025, which was originally released on 17 December 2024.
This amendment specifically adds 27 December 2025 as a public holiday in Uttar Pradesh. The day is celebrated as the 359th Prakash Parv of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, with gurudwaras across India being decorated for the occasion.
Connection to Veer Bal Diwas and Nationwide Observances
The holiday follows the observance of Veer Bal Diwas on December 26. This day honors the martyrdom and bravery of the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji. The Union Government organizes nationwide programs to educate citizens about their sacrifice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on social media platform X, described Veer Bal Diwas as a "day of reverence." He highlighted the courage and righteousness associated with the Sahibzades and the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. A key event was held at Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, where awardees of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) were present.
Educational institutions across the country marked Veer Bal Diwas with various activities, including:
- Storytelling sessions and poetry recitations.
- Poster-making and essay-writing competitions.
- Programs at Anganwadi centres.
Significance and Celebrations in Punjab
In Punjab, the observance is part of a three-day religious congregation. The annual 'Shaheedi Sabha' is held from 25 to 27 December in Fatehgarh Sahib district. This event commemorates the sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh's mother, Mata Gujri Ji, and his two younger sons. The gathering aims to promote the ideals of courage, conviction, and righteousness embodied by the Sahibzades.
The declaration by the Yogi Adityanath-led government ensures that residents of Uttar Pradesh can fully participate in and observe the religious and historical significance of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti. The holiday underscores the state's recognition of important festivals across diverse communities.
