Unseasonal Storm Ravages Rajasthan Crops: Farmers Demand Urgent Relief
In a devastating turn of events, unseasonal rain accompanied by thunder and dust storms lashed the districts of Barmer and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan from midnight Wednesday until approximately 3 am. This unexpected weather phenomenon has caused widespread crop damage, raising significant concerns among the farming community who now face severe financial losses.
Widespread Destruction Across Key Agricultural Areas
The severe weather system brought strong winds and heavy rainfall that damaged critical crops, particularly psyllium husk and other standing rabi crops across both urban and rural regions. In Jaisalmer district, farmers reported major losses in the areas of Ramgarh, Keeta, Dabla, and Fatehgarh, where standing rabi crops were completely destroyed.
Moisture from the rain has raised serious fears about cumin crops turning black, which could severely affect market prices. Meanwhile, psyllium husk crops suffered near-total loss due to grain shedding caused by the intense weather conditions. Additionally, harvested produce that had been left in the fields was thoroughly soaked, compounding the damage.
Barmer District Bears the Brunt of Crop Damage
In Barmer's border areas, including Bakhasar, Sedwa, and Chauhtan, farmers stated that the rain hit cumin crops the hardest. Many agriculturalists reported that their crops were ready for harvest when the sudden downpour ruined both standing and harvested produce, leading to heavy financial losses that threaten their livelihoods.
Farmers, many of whom had taken loans to finance their agricultural operations, are now demanding immediate surveys and compensation from authorities. They have issued warnings about worsening distress if timely relief measures are not implemented to address their urgent needs.
Meteorological Explanation and Political Response
The Meteorological Department attributed this unusual weather pattern to a western disturbance that altered weather patterns across several parts of the state. This atmospheric phenomenon created the conditions for the unseasonal rain and thunderstorms that devastated agricultural lands.
Barmer MP Ummeda Ram Beniwal has urgently appealed to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal to order a swift girdawari (crop damage assessment) and investigate irregularities in insurance claims. The parliamentarian emphasized that losses worth lakhs of rupees have pushed already indebted farmers into a severe crisis situation.
Beniwal has called for the announcement of a special relief package, stating that a comprehensive financial assistance program is necessary to provide immediate relief and support farmers in resuming their agricultural activities.
