A 30-year-old farmer from Ujjain district in Madhya Pradesh died by suicide on Tuesday night, just hours after he posted a video on social media platforms claiming extensive damage to his wheat crop due to a recent hailstorm. The incident has sparked significant controversy as an official agricultural survey conducted on his farm revealed no substantial damage to his standing wheat crop, creating a stark contrast between the farmer's personal distress and administrative findings.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The farmer, identified as Pankaj Malviya, was discovered deceased on his agricultural land in Kheda Jamuniya village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Makdaun police station, on Wednesday morning. According to police reports, Malviya had shared the video detailing crop destruction on Tuesday afternoon and took his own life later that same night.
Makdaun police station in-charge Pradeep Singh Rajput provided additional context, stating that Pankaj had eaten dinner with his family on Tuesday evening before proceeding to his farm. "Family members went to the farm in the morning to release their cattle and discovered him hanging from a tree. They immediately informed the police authorities. Our investigation at the scene did not uncover any suicide note," Rajput explained.
Official Response and Family Background
Local police registered a formal case and conducted a postmortem examination at Makdaun before returning the body to the grieving family members. The final rites were performed at his ancestral village of Kheda Jamuniya. While the precise motivation behind his suicide remains undetermined, family members revealed that Pankaj's father had passed away several years earlier, leaving him responsible for approximately eight bighas of agricultural land. He is survived by a young daughter and son.
Interestingly, just two days before his tragic death, Pankaj had celebrated his sister's engagement ceremony, with the wedding scheduled for April. During discussions with his in-laws on Monday, he had specifically expressed concerns about potential crop damage affecting his ability to manage upcoming wedding expenses.
Political Intervention and Administrative Findings
Congress MLA Mahesh Parmar visited the village after learning about the farmer's death and demanded substantial compensation for the bereaved family. "The farmer explicitly shared his worries with his in-laws about how he would handle wedding costs due to crop damage. The current administration appears unwilling to acknowledge the genuine crop losses experienced by farmers in this region," Parmar asserted, calling for Rs 50 lakh in compensation.
Area tehsildar Naveen Chandra Kumbhakar presented a contrasting perspective based on official assessments. "We conducted a thorough survey of the deceased farmer's agricultural land through the patwari system. The wheat crop remains standing in the field, and our examination did not identify significant damage. We documented the crop condition with video evidence and prepared an official panchnama report," Kumbhakar stated.

Kumbhakar further clarified that while 20-22 out of 120 villages in the broader area experienced some agricultural damage, Kheda Jamuniya village was not among those affected locations. "Rainfall occurred in the area on Tuesday afternoon, but the farmer had already posted his video on social media earlier that morning. Therefore, his suicide appears unrelated to these weather developments," the tehsildar concluded.
