A heartbreaking incident in Karnataka's Raichur district has claimed the lives of two young women. The victims, identified as Iramma, 35, and Devamma, 30, drowned in the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal on Wednesday evening.
The Fateful Evening Near Anehosur Village
The tragedy unfolded near Anehosur village in Lingasugur taluk. According to details gathered by authorities, both women were residents of Nanjaladinni village in the neighbouring Maski taluk. They had spent the day engaged in strenuous agricultural work, specifically paddy sapling planting.
Exhausted after their labour, the duo was on their way back home. As they passed by the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal, they decided to stop and freshen up. They stepped to the canal's edge to wash their hands, feet, and face. In a moment of terrible misfortune, they accidentally slipped and fell into the water.
Rescue Efforts and Recovery
Upon learning of the accident, a combined rescue operation was swiftly launched. Personnel from the Lingasugur police station and the local fire brigade rushed to the spot. They were significantly aided in their efforts by members of the local community who joined the search.
Despite their concerted efforts, the outcome was tragic. The search teams managed to retrieve the bodies of both women from the canal. The recovered bodies were then transported to the mortuary of the Lingasugur taluk hospital for formal procedures.
Aftermath and Official Response
Following the recovery, the Lingasugur police have registered a case in connection with the drowning incident. This formal filing initiates the official process of investigation and documentation. The local community has been left in a state of shock and mourning by the sudden loss of the two women, who were returning from a day of honest work.
This incident highlights the often-overlooked dangers posed by canal banks, which can be slippery and treacherous. It serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by daily wage labourers and agricultural workers in rural areas, even during routine activities at the end of a long day.
