Consecutive Explosions Rock Bishnupur District
Two individuals were wounded in two separate explosions that occurred within hours of each other in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Monday morning. The incidents, suspected to be caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), have sparked tension and protests among local residents.
Timeline of the Morning Blasts
The first explosion took place at approximately 5:45 AM at an abandoned house in the Ngaukon area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Phougakchao police station. According to authorities, the house had been vacant since the outbreak of ethnic violence in the state in May 2023, with its owner and family currently residing in a relief camp.
The second blast occurred nearly three hours later, around 8:45 AM, and was located about 200 meters from the first site. This explosion happened as locals had gathered in the area after hearing news of the initial blast.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The injured have been identified as Sanatomba Singh and Indubala Devi. Both sustained splinter injuries to their right legs. They were promptly admitted to a government hospital for treatment, where their condition is reported to be stable and out of danger.
Police teams inspected both blast sites and have initiated a thorough investigation into the attacks to determine the perpetrators and the exact nature of the explosives used.
Local Anger Erupts into Protest
The twin explosions triggered immediate anger and frustration among the local community. Irate residents confronted security forces who arrived at the scene, engaging in a heated war of words.
The protesters accused the security personnel of significant lapses, arguing that they failed to prevent the attack despite a substantial presence in nearby areas. In a display of their discontent, locals also dismantled a makeshift security bunker situated in the vicinity of the blast sites.
