Trinamool Congress Makes Strategic Candidate Switch for Key Kolkata Constituency

In a significant political maneuver ahead of the April 29 assembly election, the Trinamool Congress has announced a candidate change for the closely watched Jorasanko constituency in Kolkata. The party has fielded two-time councillor Vijay Upadhyay, replacing the sitting MLA Vivek Gupta. This decision comes as Trinamool aims to strengthen its position in a seat where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been making steady inroads among the business community and sections of the Hindi-speaking electorate.

A Calculated Move in a Politically Sensitive Seat

Party leaders have described the move as strategic, emphasizing that Jorasanko has been won by Trinamool three times since 2011, yet faces increasing competition. The constituency's political landscape is shaped by identity politics, commerce, and local networks, making candidate selection crucial. Upadhyay, regarded within the party as a loyalist with cross-community acceptability, is seen as a "deeply religious" figure who could broaden the party's appeal without alienating any group.

"I am a deeply religious person, but not an extremist," Upadhyay stated in an interview, highlighting his moderate stance. This image is particularly important in Jorasanko, where four out of eleven wards have a substantial Muslim population, a demographic that Trinamool is actively courting.

Upadhyay's Political Journey and Vision

With eleven years of experience as a councillor, Upadhyay describes himself as a "loyal soldier" of the Trinamool Congress. He joined the party formally in 2010 but was involved in the Singur and Nandigram movements while representing the Samajwadi Party earlier. He credits his long association with the party leadership, including Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, for the trust placed in him.

Addressing the political climate, Upadhyay criticized the BJP, saying, "BJP has no issue except Hindutva. They want to divide people, but I will act as a bridge between communities in Jorasanko." He also dismissed concerns over voter deletions noted in the SIR 2026 report, which showed Jorasanko had one of the highest rates, alleging that attempts to "harass" voters would backfire politically.

Reassuring the Trader Community and Political Reactions

Upadhyay sought to reassure Jorasanko's influential trader base, stating, "People can do business without any fear." This message is key in a constituency where economic stability is a major concern. Even within the BJP, Upadhyay's candidature has drawn attention. A local BJP leader acknowledged that Trinamool has "sprung a surprise" with this move, noting that Upadhyay is respected across political and social groups and has deep local knowledge, which might make it difficult for the opposition to target his personal image.

The BJP has yet to announce its candidate for Jorasanko. By selecting a familiar local face with a religious yet moderate public image, Trinamool is betting that Upadhyay can counter BJP's appeal among traders and Hindi-speaking voters while maintaining the coalition that has kept the constituency under its control since 2011. Upadhyay confidently predicted, "This time, Trinamool will register its biggest win in Jorasanko."
