Trichy Election Canvassing Turns Violent: Senior Citizen, TVK Leader Booked
In a disturbing incident highlighting the tensions of election season, a 64-year-old resident of Sheshayee Nagar in Trichy was booked on charges of abusing and assaulting members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party who were canvassing for votes on Wednesday night. The altercation, which escalated into physical violence, also led to a counter-complaint against a TVK functionary, resulting in both parties facing legal action.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 8:30 PM when C Vellaisamy, the TVK's Trichy airport area secretary, along with a group of party workers including women, were engaged in door-to-door canvassing for the upcoming assembly elections in Sheshayee Nagar. As they passed by the residence of the elderly man, identified as Sivakumar, he reportedly criticized TVK president Vijay, sparking a heated verbal altercation.
The situation quickly deteriorated as Sivakumar allegedly began abusing Vellaisamy and other party members. In a shocking turn of events, he is accused of throwing a wooden log at one of the women in the group, causing an injury to her right elbow. The injured woman was subsequently admitted to Trichy Government Hospital for treatment, underscoring the severity of the confrontation.
Legal Action and Counter-Complaints
Following the incident, Vellaisamy lodged a formal complaint with the KK Nagar police station. In response, police registered a case against Sivakumar under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges for abuse and voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon. Additionally, a case was filed under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act, 1998, reflecting the gender-specific nature of the assault.
In a twist, Sivakumar filed a counter-complaint against Vellaisamy, alleging that the TVK leader assaulted him with a flag stick during the altercation. Police have registered a separate case against Vellaisamy under the BNS for charges including rioting, verbal abuse, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation.
