Tourist Killed by Lightning on Mahendragiri Hill During Trek, Body Found Near Temple

A 48-year-old tourist from Cuttack district, who went missing during a severe thunderstorm on Mahendragiri hill in Gajapati district, was found dead near the ancient Bhima temple located at the peak. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, and the body was discovered on Monday following an extensive search operation.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Police identified the victim as Binod Jena, an autorickshaw driver from Bairoi in Cuttack district. According to authorities, Jena was killed by a lightning strike during the thunderstorm. Madhabanand Nayak, the subdivisional police officer (SDPO) of Paralakhemundi, stated, "Several parts of his body are burnt. The medical report also confirms his death in lightning strike."

Jena was trekking towards the Bhima temple atop Mahendragiri in the Eastern Ghats with three friends when the storm struck. His friends survived by taking shelter inside the temple, but Jena was unable to reach safety in time.

Search and Recovery Efforts

The body was found near the Bhima temple during a joint search operation conducted by fire, forest, and police personnel. SDPO Nayak explained that initial searches on Sunday afternoon were unsuccessful, prompting a resumed effort on Monday morning with additional personnel. "They could not find the body on Sunday afternoon, even though they searched the area immediately after getting the report. The search operation was resumed in the morning by involving more personnel," he said.

After the discovery, the body was taken to Paralakhemundi hospital for a postmortem examination, which confirmed the cause of death. It was subsequently handed over to Jena's family members.

Police Response and Support for the Family

Police officials have indicated that they will recommend providing ex gratia compensation to the family of the deceased, as his death resulted from a lightning strike. This move aims to offer financial support to the bereaved family during this difficult time.

The incident highlights the dangers of trekking during adverse weather conditions, especially in hilly regions prone to sudden thunderstorms. Authorities urge tourists to check weather forecasts and take necessary precautions when planning outdoor activities in such areas.
