TMC's Rajya Sabha Nominees Make Political Debut Alongside Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata

In a significant political event in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress's Rajya Sabha nominees, former Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar and senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, made their debut on the political stage on Friday, standing alongside Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The occasion marked a pivotal moment for the party as it prepares for the upcoming Upper House elections.

Guruswamy's Powerful Speech on Constitutional Rights

While Rajeev Kumar exhibited hesitancy and refrained from speaking, Menaka Guruswamy delivered a compelling two-minute address that resonated deeply with the audience. Her speech culminated in a firm pledge to defend Bengal's voters' rights in the Supreme Court and all other courts, sparking spontaneous applause from the crowd.

Guruswamy, who is reported by TOI to be the first openly queer person to contest the March 16 Rajya Sabha polls, began her remarks with TMC's trademark "Jai Bangla" slogan, adding "Jai Samvidhan, Jai voting rights." She eloquently emphasized the Constitution's principles of equality and voting rights, stating, "The Constitution which we have adopted says two primary things about all of us: that we are all equals. We are equal irrespective of our religion, community, gender or the place we belong to. And the second most important point the Constitution emphasises is that every citizen of this country has the right to vote."

Speaking in Hindi, with CM Banerjee nodding in approval and notable figures like poet Joy Goswami and singer Kabir Suman listening intently, Guruswamy continued, "I am a lawyer. And I am an ordinary lawyer. But I have only one thing in my heart — the Constitution of India." She highlighted concerns over potential disenfranchisement, asserting, "If that happens, how will elections be free and fair? We will fight against this in the Supreme Court, and in every other court," with her words repeatedly met with applause.

Kumar's Reserved Presence on Stage

In contrast, Rajeev Kumar maintained a low profile during the event. He chose to sit at the far right of the stage, flanked by seasoned politicians such as state IT minister Babul Supriyo, another Rajya Sabha pick, and Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra. Kumar did not address the audience or engage with reporters on the sidelines, showcasing a more reserved approach to his political introduction.

Expected Smooth Passage to Rajya Sabha

Both nominees are anticipated to secure their positions in the Rajya Sabha smoothly, leveraging TMC's numerical strength in the Bengal assembly. This strategic move by the party underscores its focus on reinforcing its representation in the Upper House with individuals who bring diverse backgrounds and expertise.

The event not only highlighted the nominees' debut but also reinforced TMC's commitment to constitutional values and voter rights, setting the stage for upcoming political battles and legal challenges.
