Trinamool Congress Files Formal Complaint with Election Commission Against Dilip Ghosh

In a significant political development, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission against former party national vice-president Dilip Ghosh. The complaint alleges that Ghosh made threatening remarks directed at Trinamool leaders, party workers, and the general public, potentially inciting violence and violating the model code of conduct.

Allegations of Inciting Violence and Creating Fear

The party's complaint specifically references Ghosh's comments regarding the recent incident at the residence of state minister Shashi Panja. According to the TMC, Ghosh stated that if an attack could occur at Panja's home, similar incidents could potentially happen in Kalighat or at the residence of Madan Mitra. The Trinamool Congress contends that these remarks were deliberately intended to provoke unrest in the Kalighat and Chetla areas and to create a pervasive atmosphere of fear among local residents.

Formal Demands to the Election Commission

In its detailed submission to the poll panel, the Trinamool Congress has made several formal demands:

  • Issuance of a show-cause notice to Dilip Ghosh for alleged violations of the model code of conduct.
  • Direction for the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Ghosh.
  • Provision of additional security measures at Shashi Panja's residence and in the Kalighat and Chetla areas to ensure safety and prevent potential violence.

Separate Complaint Regarding Misleading Video Content

In a separate but related complaint, the Trinamool Congress has also raised concerns about a video circulated through the official handle of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party alleges that this video contains selectively edited and truncated clips of speeches by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. According to the TMC, these clips are presented out of context in a misleading manner. The party has formally demanded the immediate removal of this video content to prevent misinformation and maintain electoral integrity.

The Election Commission is now expected to review both complaints thoroughly. This development highlights the escalating political tensions in Kolkata as parties navigate the complexities of election campaigning under the strict guidelines of the model code of conduct. The outcome of the EC's investigation could have significant implications for the conduct of future political discourse and campaign activities in the region.
