The state capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, is currently experiencing a severe and escalating drinking water crisis, with residents in numerous localities facing significant difficulties in accessing adequate potable water. This situation has been exacerbated by the early onset of summer heat and technical failures at the crucial Aruvikkara water treatment plant.
Political Disputes and Emergency Proposals
City corporation authorities and opposition parties are now embroiled in conflicts over how to address the growing water shortage. In an all-party meeting held on Tuesday, Mayor V V Rajesh proposed an emergency measure to alleviate the acute scarcity. He suggested deploying 15 tanker lorries to supplement the city's drinking water supply.
According to sources within the corporation, this proposal was intended as a temporary solution to reduce pressure on the pipeline distribution system, which has been disrupted by diminished water levels at Kerala Water Authority (KWA) vending points and ongoing repair works. To date, no further formal discussions or decisions have been reported regarding this tanker proposal.
Political Criticism and Public Frustration
The water shortage has ignited sharp political criticism, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has accused both the state government and the civic administration of failing to ensure a sufficient drinking water supply for ordinary households. In statements made on social media and through local protests, BJP leaders asserted that the government was "unable to provide water to the people" and demanded more decisive action to resolve the crisis.
Public frustration is mounting as well, with long queues for water tanker bookings via the Smart Trivandrum app and hundreds of pending delivery requests, as confirmed by corporation officials. Areas such as Akkulam, Vazhuthacaud, Kazhakkoottam, and Thampanoor are among the worst affected by the water scarcity.
Ongoing Challenges and Calls for Solutions
Residents report that the water crisis has persisted since early January, despite ongoing repairs and maintenance at critical infrastructure points. There is a growing demand for both immediate relief measures, such as the deployment of additional water tankers, and long-term strategies to strengthen the city's overall water system. The combination of technical setbacks, seasonal heat, and political disagreements continues to challenge efforts to provide reliable drinking water to Thiruvananthapuram's populace.
