Thiruvananthapuram District Development Committee Implements Stringent Measures to Tackle Water Crisis and Wildlife Conflict

The District Development Committee (DDC) in Thiruvananthapuram has announced a series of proactive measures to address the escalating drinking water crisis, particularly in coastal regions experiencing severe shortages. This decisive action comes even before the peak summer season has commenced, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Strict Water Restrictions and Sanitation Initiatives

The committee has directed officials to enforce rigorous restrictions on the use of potable water for non-essential purposes. This includes activities such as building construction and vehicle washing, which will now face stringent controls to conserve precious drinking water resources.

In light of the recent spread of amoebic encephalitis, the meeting emphasized the critical need for immediate cleaning and protection of water bodies. Ponds, streams, and other natural water sources will undergo urgent sanitation measures to prevent contamination and safeguard public health.

Intensified Wildlife Conflict Management

The DDC has further resolved to enhance the activities of the district-level monitoring committee established to address forest-wildlife conflicts. Special attention will be given to controlling the increasing menace of wild boars, which have been causing significant disturbances in the region.

Review of Development Projects and Official Directives

District-level officials have been instructed to prioritize issues raised during the development committee meetings and ensure timely follow-up on all decisions. The gathering conducted a comprehensive review of development works across multiple constituencies, including:

  • Thiruvananthapuram and Attingal Lok Sabha constituencies
  • Vattiyoorkavu and Varkala assembly constituencies

In the Vattiyoorkavu constituency, MLA V K Prashanth assessed the progress of several key projects, including:

  1. The Melekadavu tourism project
  2. Pattom and Peroorkada flyovers
  3. Ration distribution systems
  4. Vattiyoorkavu junction development
  5. Various other ongoing infrastructure works

High-Level Meeting and Official Participation

The important meeting was convened at the collectorate conference hall and witnessed participation from senior district officials. Notable attendees included ADM Vineeth T K and district planning officer Praveen P, along with other key administrative figures, underscoring the significance of the decisions taken.

These comprehensive measures reflect the district administration's commitment to addressing pressing environmental and developmental challenges through coordinated action and strategic planning.
