In a stern move to ensure clean and fair elections, Thane's top civic official has announced a zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorized political advertising, warning of criminal prosecution for repeat offenders. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Saurabh Rao issued the warning during a review meeting ahead of the city's upcoming civic polls.
Crackdown on Unauthorized Campaign Material
Saurabh Rao explicitly directed officials to file criminal cases against individuals or groups found repeatedly putting up illegal posters and banners across Thane. This strict directive comes as part of enforcing the Model Code of Conduct, which is now active in the city. An official present at the meeting stated that a recent drive led by the corporation resulted in the removal of a staggering 3,778 unauthorized posters and banners from various public spaces.
The official emphasized that displaying such material at major intersections, flyovers, poles, and bus stops is completely unacceptable. The administration is determined to identify and hold responsible those who flout these rules, fixing accountability directly on the perpetrators.
Comprehensive Plan for Fair and Transparent Elections
Commissioner Rao laid out a detailed plan to ensure the Thane Municipal Corporation elections, scheduled for January 15, 2026, are conducted impartially. He instructed his teams to work towards a process that is fair, transparent, and peaceful, adhering strictly to the guidelines set by the State Election Commission.
Rao mandated a strict watch to prevent any violation of rules, attempts to exert undue influence, illegal campaigning, unauthorized expenditure, or misuse of government machinery. He ordered officials to promptly address all election-related complaints and submit reports within the given deadlines.
Focus on Infrastructure and Security
Beyond campaigning rules, Rao's instructions covered critical election infrastructure and security. He stressed the need for adequate physical facilities at all polling stations. This includes ensuring hygiene, provision of drinking water, and creating accessible facilities for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Necessary amenities for women voters must also be in place.
Security will be heightened in sensitive and highly sensitive wards across Thane, with the civic body working in close coordination with the police administration. Increased patrolling will be implemented to maintain law and order throughout the election period.
On the technical front, Rao emphasized the importance of comprehensive training for polling staff, including hands-on practice with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He mandated that the secure transportation, storage, and handling of EVMs must be executed in strict accordance with the Election Commission's guidelines, leaving no room for error or malpractice.
